Jack Hawkins at War Trivia Quiz

Here are historical war films/epics which involve veteran actor Jack Hawkins. These are the only ones I've seen which feature him, so references to "Angels One Five", "Lafayette" and "Bonnie Prince Charlie" have not been included.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Ben Hur", I played the Roman commander, who adopts Judah Ben Hur played by Charlton Heston. My name is _________.

Answer: Quintus Arrius

Every other name given is a real Roman figure. Pontius Pilate was the governor of Judea who is also represented in the movie, Flavius Silva was the general who beseiged Masada (played by Peter O'Toole in the movie with the same name) and Publius Scipio was the father of Scipio Africanus who should have a movie made about him.
2. In "Bridge On the River Kwai", I led this rather "rum" group, in which I was accompanied by Shears, who was played by William Holden. Our mission was to destroy the bridge which was built by Lt. Col. Nicholson, played by Sir Alec Guinness.

Answer: Force 316

They're all made up. "Attack Force Z" was an Australian movie which starred Mel Gibson and Sam Neill. Admiral Mountbatten was the commander of SEAC (South East Asian Command) whose HQ is depicted in the movie. The Chindits was a special British unit, led by Orde Wingate, and not depicted in the movie. They were never led by Mountbatten. I just made up SCG 12.
3. Speaking of the Jedi Master, I starred in this movie as his commanding officer and he played a courageous but tragic Spitfire pilot.

Answer: The Malta Story

Both actors were not even cast in the three other films. "Battle of Britain" starred Robert Shaw and Laurence Olivier to name a few and "The Dam Busters" starred Richard Todd. Like "The Malta Story", both are movies depicting historical events. "Where Eagles Dare" starred Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton, which was pure fiction.
4. In "Waterloo", I played this British General who opposed Napoleon, played by Rod Steiger, in his last battle.

Answer: Sir Thomas Picton

The Iron Duke was played by Christopher Plummer. Uxbridge lost his leg. Lord Hill was not even shown in the movie. True to historic detail, his character lost his uniform when his baggage went down with the ship carrying them, so he fought the battle wearing civilian clothes. He loses his life to a shrapnel wound to the head.
5. In "The Cruel Sea", I'm Captain of this ship assigned to convoy duty during the battles with Hitler's Kriegsmarine. My ship's name is the HMS ________ .

Answer: Compass Rose

I made up the others, and the only real ship is the HMS Campbeltown which was involved in the raid on St. Nazaire codenamed "Operation Chariot". Filled with explosives, it was used to destroy the locks of the port's dry dock. The mission was a success.
6. Still on the subject of "The Cruel Sea", this actor played a thorn in my side and an insufferable and overbearing "prima donna" to the rest of my crew. In "Zulu", the roles are completely reversed, as he played the heroic defender and I was the drunken coward. He is __________ .

Answer: Stanley Baker

David Niven and Anthony Quayle, along with Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn, were his co-stars in "The Guns of Navarrone". Michael Caine also starred in "Zulu" as Lt. Bromhead. I played the Reverend Otto Witt with Baker playing Lt. Chard.
7. In "Lawrence of Arabia", I played the general who was his nominal commander. "El Ahrens" of course was played by Peter O'Toole. My name is ___________.

Answer: Sir Edmund Allenby

Townsend and Murray were Allenby's predecessors in the desert campaign of World War One, while Montgomery would find glory in the desert in another war.
8. Back to "The Bridge Over the River Kwai", I uttered these words when I had observed that Lt. Col. Nicholson had apparently gone mad and was actually helping the Japanese unravel our plans. I said, quite fraught with indignation, "__________".

Answer: Kill him. Kill him!

Shears follows suit but is killed, along with Joyce, by infantry fire. And in the next scene, the mortar I fire hits Nicholson and in one of Hollywood's best scenes; he plunges towards the detonating switch and blows up the bridge as he slumps over dead.
9. Back to "The Cruel Sea", as I mentioned earlier, the movie portrayed the struggles between the Allied convoys and the German U-boats. How many U-Boats can I claim to have sunk during the entire war?

Answer: Two

In six long years of war, the Compass Rose can only claim one U-Boat sunk before she herself became a victim of the cruel sea. I sank the other U-boat while in command of my second vessel, The Salt Ash Castle.
10. In this movie, I played Gen. William Slim and it chronicled the war in Burma and my efforts to defeat the Japanese.

Answer: Have you gone mad? There is no such thing!

If there was a role I always envisioned Jack Hawkins performing this would have been it. He has the right physical stature as well as a gentle but commanding presence. Unfortunately, it has come to pass. "Defeat Into Victory" is actually Slim's command memoirs.
