Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001), the fellowship run from which creature in the Mines of Moria?

Answer: Balrog

In a memorable scene, Gandalf the Grey protects the fellowship by fending off the Balrog, allowing Frodo and the ring to escape the deep Mines of Moria. Holding on for his life, Gandalf has to let go and fall into a chasm pulled down by the demon chasing behind.

It is discovered in the second film, "The Two Towers", that once the Bridge of Khazad-dūm collapsed, Gandalf and the Balrog continued fighting to the top of the mountain Zirakzigil. After an extensive battle, both Gandalf and the Balrog fell. Gandalf, however, was sent back to Middle Earth as Gandalf the White, a much more powerful wizard. Nazgūls, also known as Ringwraiths, pursued Frodo and the Ring through most of the journey. Ents are tree creatures from Fangorn Forest, and Shelob is a spider-creature fought by Sam and Frodo in Cirith Ungol.

They appeared in "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" respectively.
2. Found in the Cave of Caerbannog, what creature in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975) is inexplicably killed by an event occurring outside the film?

Answer: Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh

The film, a cult classic comedy starring the Monty Python troupe, has gone down as one of the more popular comedy films according to many outlets. After a long journey, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table end up at the Cave of Caerbannog guarded by a killer rabbit (the aptly named Rabbit of Caerbannog).

When they venture inside with Brother Maynard, he is promptly eaten and they are forced to flee from the animated Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh. This chase promptly ends when Terry Gilliam, the film's animator, suffers from a horrible heart attack and the beast is no more.

After this, the knights find their way to the Bridge of Death on the Gorge of Eternal Peril.
3. In what 1988 film do Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin come face to face with a rather large sand worm outside their front door?

Answer: Beetlejuice

Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin, as the Maitlands, have died. Doomed to 'haunt' the house they live in together, the two are forced to seek help in ridding their country abode of its new residents, the post-modern Deetze family (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones, and Winona Ryder).

When they find that their case worker from beyond the grave is unable to help them beyond a couple of helpful tips, they ask Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to help. Soon though, they realize this is a bad idea. The couple is unable to leave their house, despite being dead, because they can't leave without emerging in a desert world populated by angry sand worm creatures. Geena Davis' character later uses this to her advantage.
4. In "Cloverfield", a monster wreaked havoc on which major city?

Answer: New York City

J.J. Abrams' 2008 monster movie, "Cloverfield", was quite the significant film in North America. Hyped up by a viral marketing ploy and mysteriously kept under-wraps for months before its box office release, "Cloverfield" was extremely successful, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year by January, before most films even got a chance. Filmed entirely on handheld cameras (becoming the one of the first to popularize the 'shaky-cam' style). You either liked or hated the abrupt urgency of the story, a journey of a small group of survivors, traveling across the city to save a trapped friend and evacuating the city before it's nuked to stop the Cloverfield monster in its tracks.

The origin of the monster is unknown, and while it's extremely dangerous, a complete image of the creature is difficult to come by. You only see the most of it at the end of the film, but never a full shot.
5. In "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", what creatures, both large and small, are offshoots of a malevolent spirit on Earth?

Answer: Phantoms

With the planet near-uninhabitable, a group of scientists and military personnel are trying to save the world. Dr. Aki Ross is on the hunt for eight spirits in order to stop the Phantoms, a group of spirit-like creatures which have the ability to remove human spirits from their bodies, effectively killing people.

It is soon discovered that Aki herself is the eighth spirit and that she must offer herself up to the source of the phantom spirits. "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" was a box office disappointment.

Despite the fact that the film was a graphical achievement and became a benchmark for 3D visual effects and the all-star cast, it just never made it in regaining its budget.
6. More creatures from space! Which of these robots is a Decepticon?

Answer: Starscream

In Michael Bay's 2007 film, "Transformers", viewers were treated to classic Transformers from both the Autobot side (consisting of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and others) and the Predacon side (including Megatron and Starscream). The film followed Shia LabBeouf as Sam Witwicky and a slew of other supporting characters as they fought to save the world from the extremely dangerous Predacons. Supporting them were the Autobots, who used their transforming powers to destroy a lot of different buildings and such in their assistance. The film was a box office success becoming one of the year's blockbusters.

It was followed up with a sequel ("Revenge of the Fallen") in 2009 which was just as successful.
7. The alien vehicles in Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" were known by which name?

Answer: Tripod

In 2005, Steven Spielberg released his version of H.G. Wells' popular novel, "War of the Worlds", starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. In this movie, the world is invaded by aliens who travel across the land eliminating the human race in their vehicles, the Tripods (due to their three legs) which were buried underground years ago.

The Tripods had one gun which could instantly zap humans into ash and another which would spray human blood, harvested from live specimens, onto tangles of vines created by the ships. "War of the Worlds" was one of the higher-grossing films of 2005.

It earned three Academy Award nominations in the same year.
8. It may not be a dragon, but it still shoots fire! In "Wild Wild West", a large mechanical version of which creature treks across the American mid-west?

Answer: Spider

Although a critical flop, "Wild Wild West" (1999) was notorious for combining Will Smith, Salma Hayek, a giant metal spider, and a number of metallic, decapitating, spinning sawblades in a cornfield. Also starring Kevin Kline, the comedy/action film was about early American secret agents who had to determine the location of the country's smartest scientists after their kidnappings.

As it turns out, they had been captured to create Kenneth Branagh's giant metal spider extraordinaire. The film culminates with a fight on this hydraulic beast. The film beat its budget and still premiered at number one, and though it was valuable for what it was (and Will Smith's clean rap single, "Wild Wild West"...and you thought "Men in Black" was a plug), it was still panned.
9. What gargantuan creature was featured in a 1998 film directed by Roland Emmerich (who also created "Independence Day")?

Answer: Godzilla

Receiving negative reviews and five Razzie nominations (two of which it won), "Godzilla" showed in theaters in early 1998. This film in the well-known Japanese series was an American adaptation by Roland Emmerich who would later direct "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012". Starring Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno, Godzilla heads to New york City (where else...right?) to wreak havoc and cause commotion destroying all our national landmarks. (This happens in nearly every one of Emmerich's movies...see the trend?).

The movie features many scenes in which the military follows Godzilla around the streets and a particularly fun romp around Madison Square Garden filled with hundreds of hatching Godzilla eggs. The film nearly tripled its budget in box office returns, releasing on one of the more popular theatre weekends in late May.
10. In "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (2006), Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp) is eaten by which creature?

Answer: Kraken

The follow-up to the vastly-popular "Curse of the Black Pearl", "Dead Man's Chest" follows up the story, taking the characters back to the Caribbean Sea to help Jack Sparrow defeat Davy Jones. As it turns out, Davy Jones is able to summon the Kraken of the deep with his ship, the Flying Dutchman.

In the end of the film, Johnny Depp forces himself to be eaten by the creature, destroying the Black Pearl in the process. The third film in the story, "At World's End", takes the troupe from the series to 'World's End' itself to save Captain Jack and finish off Davy Jones for good.
