Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You simply must go see "The Devil's Advocate"," Peanut says to her landlady. "It was so much fun being in that 1997 movie! I was only in a couple of scenes, playing a juror, but Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino - who was actually the Devil - were just magnificent. And, Keanu's wife was terrific. It's odd, though, I'm drawing a blank on her name. Do you know which actress played that role?"

Answer: Charlize Theron

"The Devil's Advocate" is directed by Taylor Hackford, and is based on a 1990 novel by Andrew Neiderman. Keanu Reeves plays Kevin Lomax, a ruthless defense attorney who cannot, and will not, lose. After a particularly nasty win, he is asked to help pick a jury for a prestigious New York law firm. When his picks bring the firm a win, he is approached by John Milton, played by Al Pacino, and invited to join the firm. Against his mother's advice, Lomax and his wife, Mary Ann, move to Manhattan - and while at first the possibilities seem endless and exciting, a disturbing unease begins to disrupt their new life.
Charlize Theron's career began with modeling in Europe, but her dream was to become a dancer. While attending the Joffrey Ballet School in New York, her dream was shattered by a knee injury. After a move to Los Angeles, she pursued acting jobs, and her first big movie role was in "The Devil's Advocate", as Mary Ann Lomax.
The movie, which co-stars Jeffrey Jones, Judith Ivey, Connie Nielsen and Craig T. Nelson, was a financial and critical success.
2. "I was in the spookiest movie once," Peanut says to her friend, Liz. "It was 1968, and the title was "Rosemary's Baby". It was a real thrill working with Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes - and Ruth Gordon was downright scary! But, I can't remember the name of the director. Can you?"

Answer: Roman Polanski

In "Rosemary's Baby", a young couple named Rosemary and Guy move into a New York City apartment building, where the tenants seem nondescript at first, but gradually reveal a disquieting presence. Befriended by neighbors, an elderly couple played by Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer, Rosemary's unease keeps her from settling in, despite her husband's reassurances and the neighbors' friendliness. Following a dream in which she is raped by a demon, Rosemary finds herself pregnant, and as the peculiar happenings in the building escalate, her mental stability seems to deteriorate.
The movie also featured Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Charles Grodin and Emmaline Henry. Roman Polanski wrote the screenplay, based on the 1968 novel by Ira Levin. In 1976, Sam O'Steen directed a sequel titled "Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby".
Roman Polanski made several movies in the 1960s in Europe and the UK, but "Rosemary's Baby" was his first Hollywood film. Besides directing, he has also produced, written and acted in several movies. He has been nominated for multiple awards, and won an Academy Award for Best Director for 2002's "The Pianist".
3. Peanut hands a photo album to her friend Suzi, and says, "These are all from the movie I was in with Tom Cruise. It's a fantasy adventure titled "Legend", and it also starred Mia Sara, David Bennent, Alice Playten, Cork Hubbert and Billy Barty. And while I was thrilled to meet Tom Cruise, the Devil thrilled me even more! Do you know who played him?"

Answer: Tim Curry

A dark fable, "Legend" is the tale of dark versus light, innocence versus corruption, and good versus evil. Tom Cruise plays Jack, a forest child, and Mia Sara plays Princess Lili - two innocents who must foil the Lord of Darkness, played by Tim Curry. His plan to steal unicorn horns, and bring eternal darkness to the land, could very well happen, and it is up to the boy, the fairy princess and their dwarf and elven friends to save their world.
While the film earned mostly poor reviews, and was not considered a financial success, it did garner a number of award nominations and a cult following.
Tim Curry is a multi-talented performer, with accomplishments in several fields, including film, stage, television, narration and music. His portrayal of Dr. Frank N. Furter in "Rocky Horror Picture Show", first on stage from 1973 - 1975, then on film in 1975, brought him both fame and a cult following. And, it was that role which prompted the director, Ridley Scott, to cast him as the Lord of Darkness in "Legend".
4. "I was actually scared," Peanut confesses to her neighbor. "I was in a movie titled "Constantine", and Keanu Reeves played the hero. The movie also starred Tilda Swinton, Shia LaBeouf, and Rachel Weisz as twins, but it was the man playing the Devil who scared me. Can you guess who he was?"

Answer: Peter Stormare

In the 2005 action horror movie "Constantine", John Constantine has visions - in fact he can see angels and demons. At the age of 15, driven to the brink of madness, he attempts suicide. He is revived, but only after spending two minutes in Hell. As an adult he works as a demon hunter, or exorcist, and as such has earned a particular hatred from the devil. Asked by an L.A. detective to investigate her twin sister's death, John is forced to face his own mortality and selfishness, and face the Devil as well.
An accomplished actor, musician, playwright and director, Peter Stormare began his career on stage - first in Sweden, then later in New York. His role in 1996's dark comedy "Fargo" brought him popular notice and acclaim in the US. He originally auditioned for the part of Balthazar, a half-demon, but was cast as the Devil instead.
The movie is based on the comic book "Hellblazer".
5. "I was in a horror movie back in 1987," Peanut tells her buddy Al. "It was titled "Prince of Darkness", and it starred Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, Lisa Blount, and some green liquid as the essence of Satan. I was one of the possessed street people, and so was Alice Cooper! They were all great, but it was the director who really scared me. Do you know who that was?"

Answer: John Carpenter

1987's "Prince of Darkness" features Donald Pleasence as a priest in need of advice and help. He asks Professor Howard Birack, played by Victor Wong, and a group of physics students to investigate a cylinder of green fluid in the basement of a deserted Los Angeles church.

Their conclusion is that the liquid is the essence of Satan, and quite possibly contains something even worse - Satan's father, the Anti-God. Small quantities of the fluid escape, and infect those trapped in the basement, and the future of the world may very well hinge upon what the students can do to stop what is happening. John Carpenter has been involved in several genres, as writer, director, producer, composer, and/or actor, but he is probably best-known for his work in the horror genre. Just a few of his successes include 1978's "Halloween", 1982's "The Thing" and 2005's "The Fog". And, he has scored almost all of his films, including the iconic theme from "Halloween".
6. "Movies about the Devil scare me," Peanut says to her friend, Veronica. "But, I had a bit part in one in 1999. It was directed by Roman Polanski, and it starred Johnny Depp, Lena Olin and Frank Langella. Johnny Depp played a rare book dealer, and he was hired to authenticate a book that could supposedly summon the Devil. Do you know the name of this movie?"

Answer: The Ninth Gate

In 1999's thriller, "The Ninth Gate", Johnny Depp plays Dean Corso, a money-driven book dealer, who is hired by Boris Balkan, played by Frank Langella. Balkan wants Corso to authenticate a book he recently gained possession of - "The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows". If he has the authentic copy, he will be able to summon the Devil, and plans to do so. Accepting the commission, Corso is off to Europe, where events both dangerous and supernatural await him.
Overall, the movie made a profit, but it was far from being a blockbuster, and the reviews were generally poor.
In one scene, Roman Polanski plays the taxi cab driver who drops Corso off at the airport.
And, the movie's tagline was "The only thing more terrifying than searching for the Devil... is finding him."
7. "I was in the movie "Crossroads" in 1986, Peanut tells her neighbor. "I was in the crowd at a guitar battle. Eugene Martone had to play a duel against Jack Butler, and he had to win in order to save his soul from the Devil. The Devil, who was nicknamed Scratch, was played by Robert Judd, but do you know who played Eugene?"

Answer: Ralph Macchio

In "Crossroads", Ralph Macchio plays Eugene Martone, a classical guitarist obsessed with the legendary blues musician, Robert Johnson, and his famous missing song. When he discovers that Willie Brown, Johnson's friend and fellow musician, is nearby in a minimal-security hospital, he goes to see him. Brown convinces him that if Martone helps him escape, and get to Mississippi, he will provide Martone with the missing Johnson song. During their journey, Martone discovers that Johnson and Brown both sold their souls to the Devil at the crossroads, and finds himself making a very similar deal.
Ralph Macchio, perhaps best-known for his role in 1984's "Karate Kid", did not know how to play the guitar when he was cast in "Crossroads". He underwent some intense training prior to filming so that his actions would at least look realistic. Macchio's 'part' in the duel was actually played by Steve Vai - who played Jack Butler - and Ry Cooder.
Costarring Joe Seneca, Jami Gertz and Joe Morton, the movie was directed by Walter Hill. And, the movie spawned a soundtrack titled "Crossroads" which featured music by Ry Cooder, Steve Vai and Sonny Terry.
8. "I was on a really tense movie once," Peanut says, handing Lysa a French movie bill. "It was released in 1990, and the title was "Mister Frost". Satan was locked up in a mental institution, and he wanted his doctor to kill him, so he could prove he was superior to modern science. It wasn't a well-known movie, but have you heard of it? Do you know who played Satan?"

Answer: Jeff Goldblum

The 1990 psychological thriller stars Jeff Goldblum as Mister Frost, a man who comes under the scrutiny of Detective Felix Detweiler, played by Alan Bates, during a police investigation. He admits to having bodies buried on his property, but then says nothing else for two years.

It is not until the arrival of Dr. Sarah Day, played by Kathy Baker, that he speaks again. He tells her that he is Satan. Then he has to make her believe, and convince her to kill him. Jeff Goldblum has acted in a number of successful movies, including 1985's "Silverado", 1993's "Jurassic Park" and 1996's "Independence Day".

He has also worked on stage and in television, including a two-year stint as a detective on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent".
9. "Have you seen "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" yet?" Peanut asks her friend Nora. "I had a part where I actually spoke! Of course I was nervous, because of the other actors, especially Heath Ledger. The movie was released in 2009, and featured a traveling troupe of performers, led by Doctor Parnassus, who made a bet with the Devil, and won. Can you guess who played the Devil?"

Answer: Tom Waits

In "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", Christopher Plummer plays the ancient Doctor Parnassus. The Doctor and his troupe take audiences on a journey, into the Imaginarium, where their dreams come true. Thanks to a wager made with the Devil (Mr. Nick) many years ago, the Doctor won immortality. But since then, he made another wager, to be youthful again, and the possession of his 16 year-old daughter is at stake.
Heath Ledger was cast as Tony, an outsider who joins the troupe, but after his death his part was taken over by Johnny Depp, Colin Farrel and Jude Law. The movie was directed by Terry Gilliam, a member of the Monty Python comedy troupe. And, the movie, a commercial and critical success, was nominated for several awards.
Tom Waits is a multifaceted musician, successfully composing, writing, singing and performing. But he has also appeared in quite a few movies, including 1994's "The Cotton Club" and 1992's "Bram Stroker's Dracula". Waits has earned nominations for several music awards, and won two Grammys, and, in 2011 he was honored with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
10. Peanut grins, and hands her friend Ian a movie poster. "I got this for you when I was in that 2007 supernatural film. Look at the bottom, and you'll see it's autographed by Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Sam Elliott and Peter Fonda. Fonda plays Mephistopheles, who is, of course, the Devil himself. I know the poster got a little tattered, but can you read the title?

Answer: Ghost Rider

"Ghost Rider" starts out in America's old west, with a bounty hunter, known as the Ghost Rider, refusing to follow an order given to him by the Devil - an order which would put Hell on Earth. More than a century and a half later, Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage), who as a teenager inadvertently sold his soul to the Devil, becomes the new Ghost Rider. Mephistopheles' son, Blackheart (Wes Bentley) has come to Earth, and, along with three fallen angels, intends to overturn his father's power. Blaze is offered the chance to reclaim his soul, if he can stop Blackheart. The movie was not well-received by critics, although it was profitable, and spawned a sequel, 2012's "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance", which also starred Nicolas Cage.
