Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following does this line belong to? "I made you. You made me first."

Answer: Batman

The "Batman" film of 1989 shows the emergence of the more sinister Batman and Joker, as the Joker tries to kill the people of Gotham with harmful chemicals. Batman (played this time by Michael Keaton) says this to his enemy, the Joker (played by Jack Nicholson).

It is said near the end of the film when Batman comes face to face with the Joker in the overly giant clock tower. Batman says this to the Joker when he tries to point out that Batman made him (dropped into a vat of acid), and so he couldn't be angry at the consequences.
2. Name the Guy Richie film with this line: "Bent as the Soviet sickle and as hard as the hammer that crosses it."

Answer: Snatch

"Snatch" revolves around an impeccable diamond, stolen at the beginning of the film, and the people who it affects. In the narration, Turkish describes Boris the Blade (A Russian gun dealer) as being very crooked, but also very tough ("impossible to kill") by comparing him to the communist symbol. Turkish is one of the key characters of the film and manages a living in the unlicensed boxing world.

The line is said when we see Boris trying to sell a faulty weapon to Tommy (Turkish's partner). As Boris says: "Heavy is good.

Heavy is reliable. If it does not work, you can always hit him with it."
3. Of the four "Batman" films between 1989 and 1997, which one owns this line?: "Tragic irony..or poetic justice. You tell me."

Answer: Batman Returns

"Batman Returns" (of 1992) showed us the Penguin and Catwoman in a darker light, as they colaborate to frame and destroy Batman. I'm a big fan of Tim Burton's "Batman" films, so I couldn't help but slip in another quote from one of them. This is said by the Penguin (or Ozwald Cobblepot).

His objective is to kill the first born sons of Gotham, since he was abandoned as a child and was also a first born son himself. He says this to Max Shrek, an ill-minded businessman, after threating to drown him in his company's own "carcogenic waste".

It could be said that this event would be ironic, or it could be said that it was exactly what he deserved.
4. "You stick that thing in me an' I'll stab you in the heart with it. You ever seen "Pulp Fiction"?"

Answer: Armageddon

In "Armageddon" an asteroid "the size of Texas" threatens to destroy the Earth ("a global killer") and a team of oil drillers is sent to plant one of two nuclar warheads inside it. Max says this to a member of NASA's medical staff when the crew is being assessed for their mission into space, with "that thing" being a large syringe. Max is the rather over-weight individual ("D'you have a weight-limit on the shuttle?") that we first see being tattoed while the FBI search for the various members of the team.
5. The following is said by Al Pacino in "Scent of a Woman": "I'm drowning here and you're describing the water!"

Answer: False

This line is said in "As Good as it Gets" by Melvin Udall (played by Jack Nicholson). The film is about Melvin, a man with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and how his routine life is disrupted when his neighbour is beaten up and robbed. It also revolves around his love for a woman, who seems to feel a good deal less for him.

The line is said by Melvin when Simon Bishop (the neighbour who was beaten up) tries to give him advice on his bad situation, but instead just describes it - hence, the drowning metaphor.
6. What is the name of the character who says this line?: "In this conflict he is the enemy, you are just a spectator, so why don't you just sit this one out?"

Answer: Striker

In "X-Men 2" (or "X-2") the war between mankind and Mutants finally breaks out. This is said by Colonel William Stryker. He is a military scientist with an extraordinary grudge against mutants. It is his reply to the person he believes to be Senator Kelly (but who is actually a clever and skillful shape-shifter, named Mystique) when he requests access to Eric Lensher. Eric is otherwise known as Magneto, a powerful mutant waging war against the "normal" portion of humanity.
7. Which of the following comedies boasts this line?: "Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to stay on my toes."

Answer: Naked Gun 33 1/3 The Final Insult

Lieutenant Frank Drebin, possibly my favourite comedy character from any film I've ever seen, says this in the narration of the film. He is the main character in all three "Naked Gun" films. In this one, he is retired but asks to do one last favour for the force.

Here he is pointing out that while he is in prison, going undercover to find a potential bomber, he will have to be cautious at all times. I just thought it was a hilarious little simile, going so well with all the other crazy things this detective has to say.

It's an absolutely brilliant film, easily living up to its predecessors.
8. "Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers?" In what film was this said?

Answer: XMen

The plot of "X-Men" revolves around the attempts of Magneto to change the worlds leaders into mutants, eradicating persecution. It also tells the story of Wolverine, a mutant with amnesia and an alloy skeleton, and his attempts to uncover his past. This is first said by Magneto, near the beginning of the film, in response to Charles' question of "Why are you here?" Charles is the telepathic leader of the X-Men and once a friend of Magneto's.

The line is then echoed by Charles at the end of the film, in Magneto's plastic prison cell, when Magneto asks "Why do come here Charles?". Like the "Batman" films, I love the "X-Men" movies (so far, at least) and I couldn't help but put in another question relating to them.
9. In the 2000 release of "Gone in 60 Seconds" Tumbler has the following line: "Hey man, if we're gonna use a brick, we might as well call prison and make reservations!"

Answer: False

This great line is used by Mirror Man. He is a friend of Kip's and an expert in high tech electronics (when relevant to stealing cars at least). Kip is "the brother of the notorious Memphis Raines", a legendary car-thief. Mirror Man says this to Kip as he approaches the window of a Porsche dealership with a brick in his hand ("My tool", as Kip calls it).

The story is that Kip failed to steal a huge list of cars. Threatened with his life, he now relies on his brother's help to complete the list.
10. "I will wish for death long before he finds me." What movie is this said in?

Answer: The Green Mile

"The Green Mile" is a powerful story of a prison guard and what he witnesses after an innocent man (John Coffey) is brought to death row. Considering that the film is over 3 hours long I was surprised at how much of it I retained in my head after only one viewing.

The film is a brilliant achievement. The above mentioned line was said by the older Paul Edgecomb (played by Dabbs Greer) in the narration that carries over from his conversation with an old woman at the retirement home. He reveals to her that he is over a century in age and wonders that if John Coffey's touch can extend a mouse's life (Mr.Jingles) to about 60 years of age, then how many years is he yet to live.

He points out the tragedy of his extended life, in that he will always have to face the death of his friends and family and then live on.
