Dali has fascinated me since I first became aware of him. I was very interested, not so much is his painting but his most famous film: "Un Chien Andalou".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Un Chien Andalou" is French for what?

Answer: Andalusian Dog

This refers to a dog from the region of Andalusia in Spain.
2. Who codirected this film with Dali?

Answer: Louis Bunuel

Louis Bunuel did another film with Dali called "L'age D'or".
3. Which scene is the reason "Un Chien Andalou" was banned in a number of movie theaters upon release?

Answer: the slicing of an eye open

They sliced a farm animal's eye open. It is meant to be an eye opener, pardon the pun. There is some debate as to which type of farm animal's eye was used. The general consensus seems to bea calf's eye.
4. Shortly after the 'eye' scene, a man is shown riding a bicycle. What, besides a suit, is he wearing?

Answer: a 1920s communion costume

This was one of the attacks on the Catholic church in the film.
5. Another relatively famous scene shows what crawling out of the communicant's hand?

Answer: ants

Again, Dali is attacking the Church. The wound appears to be like that of Christ's when his hand was nailed to the cross.
6. Something happens to the woman who picks up the hand in the street. What occurs shortly after that scene?

Answer: The woman is hit by a car.

I am not quite sure how this particular scene is translated, but one could make a case for the idea that emotion destroys reason. The woman is incredibly emotional and that is her reason fo remaining in the street.
7. Directly after the nudity we see the man pulling on a rope. In which order do the objects attached to the rope appear?

Answer: cork, melon, two brothers of the Christian School, two grand pianos with dead donkeys inside

Basically the objects appear from smallest to largest. Again Dali is attacking the Church.
8. Bunuel appeared as whom in the film?

Answer: the man with the razor

I just find it interesting when the director appears in the film. I guess he just wanted to open the audiences' eyes.
9. Dali appeared in the film as well. Whom did he portray?

Answer: one of the monks

The cyclist was played by Pierre Batcheff. The other monk was played by Jaime Miraville. The donkeys appeared as themselves.
10. This film and all its images are from what school of art?

Answer: surrealism

Dali is probably the most famous surrealist painter. Bunuel is a relatively famous director who did a number of surrealist films as well.
