Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh Chanukah" is a happy song about the holiday, though it is mostly popular only in English-speaking countries. Which isn't a line from the first verse of the Enlgish version of the tune?

Answer: "Come spin the dreidel"

The first verse reads, "Chanukah, Oh Chanukah/Come light the menorah/Let's have a party/We'll all dance the horah/Gather round the table, we'll give you a treat/Dreidels to play with, and latkes to eat". The second verse is more somber, speaking about remembrance of events long ago that brought us to the holiday.
2. One of my favorite Hannukah tunes is "Sevivon, Sov, Sov, Sov". The title, which translates as "Sevivon, Turn, Turn, Turn", refers to what famous Chanukah symbols?

Answer: Dreidels

The dreidel is a spinning top labeled on four sides with the Hebrew letters "Nun", "Gimel", "He", and "Shin". These letters form the first letters for the Hebrew words "Nes Gadol Hayah Sham", meaning "a great miracle happened there". In Israel, the Shin is replaced by a Pei, which stands for "Po" or "here".
3. Samuel Grossman wrote which famous Hannukah song, one of the most famous of all time? The Yiddish version of this song is called "Ikh bin a Kleyner Dreydl".

Answer: "I Have a Little Dreidel"

"I Have a Little Dreidel" is a cute little song about making a dreidel and playing with it. The Yiddish version has the dreidel made out of "blay" instead of clay to fit the rhyme. In Yiddish, blay means lead!
4. "Mi Y'malel", written by Menashe Rabina, translates to "Who can retell?" The first line in English is "Who can retell the things that befell us?" What is the second line of this song?

Answer: "Who can count them?"

A fast and upbeat song, "Mi Y'malel" is often sung in Hebrew even in the United States. The last line translates to say, "And in our days all the people Israel will unite, arise, and redeem themselves."
5. "Ma'Oz Tzur" is another well-known Hannukah song that is often sung in Hebrew. What is the name of the approximated English version of this song?

Answer: Rock of Ages

The song literally translates to "Stronghold of Rock", but the English version is quite different than the actual translation. In general, only one stanza of the six is sung on Hannukah, as the others speak of non-Chanukah events, like the exodus from Egypt or Purim.
6. A classic Hannukah song contains the lines "Ohr Chaviv, Mi Saviv, Gil Li-Yeled Rach". What is the title of this song, that precedes the previous line and means approximately "Chanukah is a great holiday"?

Answer: "Chanukah Chag Yafe"

Another song to incorporate "Sevivon, sov, sov", Chanukah Chag Yafe briefly describes the holiday. The first few lines translate to "Chanukah is a great holiday/Surrounded with lovely light/Fun for little children".
7. "Ner Rishon" is a less famous song about the lighting of a menorah. The word "ner", repeated often throughout the song, means what?

Answer: Candle

"Ner" is also used in the phrase "Ner Tamid", or eternal candle. However, the song, which means "First Candle", repeats ner, followed by the number of the candle being lit.
8. What's the title of a song whose first line reads, "_______ is a pancake, a golden pancake treat."

Answer: A latke

The latke, or potato pancake, is a symbol of Hannukah and Judaism. The oil needed to cook them reminds us of the oil that the Maccabees searched for in the Temple after the Romans desecrated it.
9. "Light One Candle" is another of my favorite Hannukah tunes. What's the constant refrain of the song, which is repeated three times at the end of it?

Answer: "Don't let the light go out!"

"Light one candle for the Maccabee children" is the first line of this song, which details the sufferings of Jews through history. The touching song urges us to light candles for the memories and hardships in our past and to find peace in the present.
10. "The Chanukah Song" is partially found in "Eight Crazy Nights" and was written and sung by what Jewish-American actor?

Answer: Adam Sandler

All of the other answer choices were part-Jews that appear in the song's "Part I". The Chanukah Song is actually divided into three separate parts, and only Part III appears in "Eight Crazy Nights".

I hope you enjoyed the quiz and learned something about a different winter music tradition!
