Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song is a memorial of a natural disaster?

Answer: 12/26

This song is about the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Kimya tells a story of a woman who survives the tsunami while the rest of her family dies. She rebukes our government for spending more money "killing Iraqis" than helping the disaster victims. She then asks listeners to imagine if it had happened to them. Makes me cry every time.
2. Finish these "Loose Lips" lyrics; "Loose lips might sink ships but loose kisses take trips to" where?

Answer: San Francisco

"Double dutch disco tech tv hottie do it for Scottie". Again Kimya brings up the Iraq war and liberal politics, "... will go away, while we strive to figure out a way we can survive these trying times without losing our minds."
3. In the song "Loose Lips" Kimya Dawson says to "do it for" all but which of the following?

Answer: The adolescents

Also you should do it for "the teenagers" and "the monsters under your bed." This song was one of the many Kimya Dawson songs on the "Juno" soundtrack. The song that is sung at the end of the movie by the two main characters, "Anyone else but You" is a song from Kimya's band the Moldy Peaches.
4. Finish these disturbing lyrics from "My Mom": "Have you ever had a dream that" what?

Answer: Your favorite baby's drowning

"And he goes limp in your arms. All the people's mouths are moving, all you hear are car alarms." This disturbing imagery leads into Kimya's discussion of her mother's terminal illness and death in general. Kimya says she will lose it "if one more person I know dies, so, please, don't die."
5. The song "My Mom" features which two "Sesame Street" characters in a "Gift of the Magi" scenario?

Answer: Bert and Ernie

Do you remember that episode where Bert trades his paper clip collection to get Ernie a soap dish for his rubber duckie while Ernie trades his rubber duckie for a cigar box that Bert can keep his paper clips in? "Sesame Street's" adaptation of "The Gift of the Magi" is something that many thirty-somethings can reminisce about.

The allusion to it in this song draws the listener further into Dawson's discussion on losing a loved one.
6. Which song is about Kimya's brother and his kid?

Answer: Better Weather

Kimya calls herself a turtle in this song. She wishes she could be a fish like her family members. Kimya's anti-folk lyrical style is to draw scenarios from her own life which can be related to universally.
7. The opening song "Tire Swing" sees Kimya recommending books to whom?

Answer: Scottie

He liked all the books she recommended, even if he didn't it wouldn't have offended her. This is another of Kimya's songs which was featured on the "Juno" soundtrack. The most powerful imagery is when Kimya and Paul are singing at the tire swing and "the sound of our voices made us forget everything that had ever hurt our feelings."
8. In "The Competition" the voices in Kimya's head tell her all but which of the following?

Answer: You're terrible at everything

They also say "you're not good at anything." This song is about overcoming self-consciousness by trying (and failing) at lots of different activities. In the last verse Kimya says now she's a singer and people identify with her lyrics, which she "sang and sang and sang about how crappy (she) felt not realizing how many other people would relate." The closing of the song is the repeated refrain, "I got good at feeling bad and that's why I'm still here."
9. In "I like Giants" Kimya discusses the insignificance of individual lives using which phrase?

Answer: I am just a speck of dust inside a giant's eye

A beautiful philosophical discussion about the insignificance of "man." This song was played in the film "Juno" but did not appear on the soundtrack.
10. In "Underground" which body of water does Dawson say that she would like her cremated body to be thrown into?

Answer: The Puget Sound

In this song Kimya says that if she isn't cremated her "soul will spend an eternity in misery, tethered and bound to this earth." I feel that this song is more about freedom from pain then it is about death. The Puget Sound is a body of water in Washington State, USA.
