Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'How can you see looking through those tears, don't you know you're worth your weight in gold?'

Answer: Mental As Anything

Their only hit in the UK, Mental As Anythings 'Live It Up' reached number 3 in 1987, made famous from its inclusion in the film 'Crocodile Dundee'
2. 'She's made you, some kind of laughing stock, because you danced the disco but you don't like rock'

Answer: Pet Shop Boys

From the Pet Shop Boys orange period, 'Can You Forgive Her' hit number 7 in 1993 and showed the Boys sporting their new cool pointy hats whilst floating around in a geometrical world. Weird.
3. 'Its a turn around jumpshot, its everybody jump start, its every generation throws a hero up the pop charts'

Answer: Paul Simon

From "The Boy In The Bubble", this song only hit number 26 in the UK in 1986, but was a big hit everywhere else, and remains one of Paul Simons staple tunes when on tour, especially because of the unusual use of bass guitar on lead.
4. 'You listen to the music and you like to sing along, you want to get the meaning out of each and every song'

Answer: Bread

From 'The Guitar Man', the clapping and cheering at the end of the song was stolen from a Doors concert, and on good CD players you can here a guy say, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, the Doors'. Sound acoustics being what they were in 1972, they never thought anyone would find out...
5. 'I was pouring myself the usual cup of tea, when the doorbell strangely rang'

Answer: Dubstar

This Geordie band never received the praise they richly deserved, and have not been heard of since the year 2000. This line was from 'Not So Manic Now', hitting number 18 in 1996.
6. 'Forget everything and remember, For everything a reason'

Answer: Ian Brown

Charting at number 13 in 2001, this song was unique as the first letter from each word of each line spells out the title, "FEAR".
7. 'I must say its really such a sad affair, standing here, waiting in the cold night air, but I've got to make this call, 'cos my heart is breaking'

Answer: Leo Sayer

I am afraid I know little about this tune, except that it hit number 16 in 1983, and is called 'Orchard Road'. Its one of those hidden classic type songs.
8. Time for a fill in the blank, I think. 'You know I hate to ask, but Are ..., 'cos mines broken down, and now I've no-one to love'

Answer: Friends Electric

If you got this, you got the title too, 'Are Friends Electric'. Big hit for Gary Numan in the summer of 1979, and incidently number One when I was born. Cheers Gary!
9. 'Don't be afraid, just knock on the door, but he just stood there mumbling and fumbling, then a voice from above said...'

Answer: Electric Light Orchestra

Weird song called 'The Diary of Horace Wimp' hitting number 8 in July 1979 about a lonely guy who gets the courage to ask a girl out, dates her and marries her withing a week, whilst being helped along with some kindly words from God presumably. They don't write them like that anymore...
10. 'We're walking like in the .... ...., this time we got it right'

Answer: Dolce Vita

The only song from Ryan Paris, 'Dolce Vita' reached number 5 in 1983, it had a really memorable tune, but screwy lyrics.
11. 'Here I am again in this mean old town, and you're ... ... ... from me'

Answer: So Far Away

"So Far Away" got to number 20 in 1985, which is a crime in my view, but I was only 6 so I couldn't do much about it. Dire Straits songs = genius, Dire Straits Videos = umm...
12. 'You've got to love somebody till morning comes, feel the sweet salvation for what we've done,'

Answer: Cher

'One by One' reached number 7 in 1996. As I remember this song was written years before but not recorded until it was discovered and passed eventually to Cher. A really good song.
13. 'If you can't feed your baby, then don't have a baby, and don't think maybe, if you can't feed your baby'

Answer: Michael Jackson

"Wanna Be Startin' Something" by Michael Jackson. Hit number 8 in 1983.
14. 'Oh the night is my world, pretty lights, painted girls, in the day, nothing matters, its the night time that flatters'

Answer: Laura Branigan

Big hit from 1984 getting to number 5. 'Self Control' was the only other song from this artist, who had scored highly late in 1983 with 'Gloria'
15. And last but not least... 'Blowing balloons on a windy day, desolate dunes with a lot to say, tell me darling, what does it mean?'

Answer: Paul McCartney

'Once Upon A Long Ago' from November 1987 got to number 10 with Paul still very much in his froggy 'We All Stand Together' mood, I reckon. Guitar riff towards the end by Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd, who does loads of stuff with Paul.
