Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Five years after hitting the top of the charts with "Love Will Keep Us Together", The Captain and Tennille returned to the number one spot one more time in 1980 with this song. Can you name it?

Answer: Do That To Me One More Time

It was "Do That to Me One More Time" that spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the winter of 1980. It propelled The Captain and Tennille to the number one spot on the charts for the first time since their 1975 debut hit "Love Will Keep Us Together". Of course, in between those two hits, they had a number of top ten singles such as "Lonely Nights (Angel Face)", a cover of the 1960s hit by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles called "Shop Around", and the aforementioned "Muskrat Love".
2. Dolly Parton makes the list with this 1981 Academy Award nominated song. Which song was it?

Answer: 9 to 5

All the songs listed were either all or part Dolly, but it was "9 to 5" the theme song from the 1980 motion picture of the same name which went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, was replaced, and then returned to the top 3 weeks later, spending 2 non-consecutive weeks at the number one position.

Not only was this song nominated for an Academy Award, (it lost), but it won two Grammy Awards as well.
3. This song was originally done by a group called The Arrows in 1975 but never charted. It did much better in 1982 when a tough chick with a black heart covered it. What's the song?

Answer: I Love Rock n' Roll

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts covered the original version of "I Love Rock N' Roll" and turned it into a mega hit. It was a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts remaining in the top position for seven weeks. It also went to number one on the Dutch charts and got as high as number four on the U.K. charts.

The song is generally acknowledged to have jump started Jett's solo career. The original version, recorded by The Arrows in 1975 was said to have been written as a response to The Rolling Stones song "Its Only Rock and Roll", however the song was not promoted by the company that released it, and it never charted for the group. Jett's version was listed by Rolling Stone Magazine at number 484 on their "500 Greatest Hits of All Time" compilation.
4. Which song, off Michael Jackson's epic "Thriller" album in 1983, is said to have propelled the album to legendary status as the best selling album of all time?

Answer: Billie Jean

Probably Jackson's finest hour, "Thriller" became the number one selling album of all time. It has much of Jackson's best work on it, but it is generally acknowledged that the success of "Billie Jean", which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for a seven week stay in the spring of 1983, was the primary impetus for Jackson's success with this album.

The song also won two Grammy Awards and an American Music Award.
5. With all the success the group Van Halen had, you would think they would have topped the charts more than once. Not so. What was their only chart-topper, a song from 1984?

Answer: Jump

"Jump" was a cut from the very successful Van Halen album "1984". The song is probably the most recognizable tune by the group. It spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts coincidently in 1984. It also became a popular MTV video, which depicted the band at a mock concert with David Lee Roth singing the lead, and a guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen.
6. REO Speedwagon had a number one tune in 1985. I have a feeling you can name it. Can you?

Answer: Can't Fight This Feeling

"Can't Fight This Feeling" propelled REO Speedwagon to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts spending three weeks there in the spring of 1985. It was the second number one hit for the group, but its first since 1980s "Keep On Loving You". The song deals with a man's realization that he has fallen in love with a girl whom he has known as a friend for a long time.
7. Mr. Mister has some success in the mid 1980s. The song here that went to number one was "Kyrie" in 1986. The song was a religious song.

Answer: True

"Kyrie" was the second number one tune for the group off the album called "Welcome to the Real World". The song spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in March of 1986. According to Richard Page and Steve George who co-wrote the tune, Kyrie elision means Lord have mercy in Greek, and is a part of many occurrences of public worship in Eastern and Western Christianity.

It's a prayer that says Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. According to Page the entire song is actually a prayer.
8. Which Madonna number one tune from 1987 has a video which shows a young boy at a peep show?

Answer: Open Your Heart

The video for "Open Your Heart" shows a young boy who makes friends with Madonna's character in the video, an employee at a local peep-show, and the two of them run away from there at the end of the clip. The song itself was Madonna's fifth number one tune on the Billboard charts, spending a week at the top in the winter of 1987.

The song came from an album called "True Blue", one of Madonna's most successful albums.
9. Michael Jackson's 1988 number one song "The Way You Make Me Feel" was the third number one song from his successful album "Thriller"

Answer: False

Nope. "The Way You Make Me Feel" was the third number one song from his album called "Bad", released in 1987. The song itself spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the winter of 1988. The other songs that hit the top from this album were "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", a duet with Seidah Garrett, the title cut "Bad", "Man in the Mirror", and "Dirty Diana".
10. The band called Sheriff had a number one hit with a song called "When I'm With You" in 1989. What was unusual about this song in relation to the group?

Answer: The song became number one four years after the group broke up

Sheriff released the song "When I'm With You" as a single from their debut album in 1983. The song peaked at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Due to a lack of success, the group broke up in 1985. In 1988 a disc jockey in California got a hold of the tune and began to play it.

It immediately caught on and became a song that was in demand, so the record company decided to release it as a single. Led by Freddy Curci's voice, the song went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the winter of 1989 despite the fact that the group no longer existed. Curci had moved on to other projects and subsequently formed a group called Alias, who had a number two tune themselves in 1990 called "More Than Words Can Say".
