Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does Frankie Laine describe what he's asking for? "To spend one night with you In our old rendezvous And reminisce with you That's __________"

Answer: my desire

Frankie Laine first recorded "That's My Desire", (written in 1931 by Helmy Kresa and Carroll Loveday) in 1946, when he was still a Jazz singer. The record spent four weeks on the U.S. Billboard Best Seller chart in 1947; it was Frankie's first charting record, peaking at Number Four.

In 1926 Georges Boulanger wrote an instrumental called ""Avant de Mourir." Jimmy Kennedy added lyrics in 1939 and it became "My Prayer." Glenn Miller and his orchestra took the song to Number Two that same year, with the Ink Spots right behind at Number Three. But it wasn't until 1956 that "My Prayer" reached the top of the charts, when the Platters' recording stayed at Number One for two weeks in August.

"This Is All I Ask" was written by Gordon Jenkins. Nat "King" Cole, Andy Williams and Frank Sinatra among others have recorded it.

"She's Just My Style," written by Al Capps, Thomas Lesslie "Snuff" Garrett, Gary Lewis, and Leon Russell, was a Number Three hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for Gary Lewis & the Playboys in 1966.
2. What does Engelbert plead to be? "Tonight I hold to nothing but the feelings in my soul My heart overflows with emotions I just can't control There's someone you are going to But tonight I just can't tell right from wrong Let me be __________"

Answer: yours until tomorrow

"Yours Until Tomorrow" by Carole King and Jerry Gossim is on Engelbert's "Release Me" album, which came out in 1967.

"There Goes My Everything" by Dallas Frazier is also on the U.S. issue of "Release me." As a single, Engelbert's recording reached Number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and Number Two in Britain.

"(They Long to Be) Close to You" by Burt Bacharach and Hal David is on Engelbert's 1972 album "In Time."

"I Want to Wake Up with You" is on Engelbert's 2003 release "Definition of Love." Ben Peters wrote it. The phrase used as a choice in the question occurs in the second stanza:

"I want to lay by your side
I want to feel every beat of your heart
And throughout the night
I want to hold you tight
I want to wake up with you"
3. Who could Neil Diamond only have "'Til the morning light?" "__________ Oh, __________ There I was found By the sweet passion sound Of your loving song The time was right, the night was long Remember, __________ Oh, __________ And though somehow I knew I could only have you 'Til the morning light The night was long, the time was right Do you remember __________ Oh, __________"

Answer: Desiree

Neil released "Desiree" in 1977, including it on the album "I'm Glad You're Here with Me Tonight." As a single, the song only peaked at Number Sixteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, but it reached Number One on the Adult Contemporary chart.
4. When does Val Doonican "know that this is all we'll ever have?" "Suddenly I look into your sleepy eyes You breathe my name and it just seems to dangle there Then I feel your fingers running through my mind Jumbling up my thoughts to leave them tangled there"

Answer: Morning

Morning was written by Brendan Graham. Val released the song as a single in 1972 and on the album "Morning in the Country" the same year.

Cole Porter wrote "In the Still of the Night" for the 1937 MGM movie "Rosalie." It has become a standard, recorded by artists as diverse as Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Engelbert Humperdinck and the Lettermen.

"Round Midnight" was written by Jazz pianist Thelonious Monk in or before 1944. A number of other musicians have made notable embellishments and variations, and Bernie Hanighen added lyrics.

"Softly, As I Leave You" by Giorgio Calabrese and Tony De Vita with English lyrics by Hal Shaper has been recorded most notably by Matt Monroe and Frank Sinatra.

5. What war is this lonesome soldier shipping out for in the morning? "In my arms, in my arms, Ain't I never gonna get a girl in my arms? In my arms, in my arms, Ain't I never gonna get a bundle of charms? Come the dawn, I'll be gone I've just gotta have a honey holding me tight You can keep your knittin' and your pearlin' If I'm-a-gonna go to Berlin Give me a girl in my arms tonight"

Answer: World War II

Berlin was the giveaway term here. In the next verse, the hapless draftee observes:

"As for something cute and warm and female,
I'll never get it in the V mail."

Frank Loesser wrote "In My Arms" and Dick Haymes recorded it during the infamous musicians strike of 1942-43, which means he is backed only by a chorus. Another, very beautiful, example of a record made during the musicians strike is Frank Sinatra's 1943 recording of "Sunday, Monday or Always."
6. What does Elvis reminisce about? "And I gave my heart to her in sweet surrender How well I remember, I'll always remember"

Answer: Such a Night

Elvis recorded "Such a Night" by Chase Lincoln in 1960 for his album "Elvis Is Back," though the song was not released as a single till 1964. Surprisingly, it only reached Number Sixteen in the States and Number Thirteen in Britain - surprising to this listener anyway. "What a night" and "that night" are phrases that occur in the song.

"The Night of My Nights" is from the 1953 Broadway musical and 1955 MGM movie "Kismet." With lyrics and musical adaptation (as well as some original music) by Robert Wright and George Forrest, adapted from the music of Alexander Borodin, the show has a book by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis. It was based on the 1911 play of the same name by Edward Knoblock.
7. Complete this lyric: "__________ Something out of a movie from Hollywood __________ Like your favorite song makes you feel so good And this amazing night, I will remember Till my time is through Because I got to spend this night with you"

Answer: This is a night

The only recording I am familiar with of "This Is a Night" by Guus Meeuwis and Barry Mason is on Engelbert Humperdinck's 1997 album "A Little in Love."

"Give me one night of your life" is a line from the Carole King/Jerry Gossim song "Yours until Tomorrow," which is on Engelbert's 1967 album "Release Me."

"A Time for Us" by Nino Rota, Edward Snyder and Lawrence Kusik is the love theme from the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli film "Romeo and Juliet." It was enormously popular and was recorded by a number of the Pop stars of the day, including Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams and Bobby Sherman. Engelbert's recording of "A Time for Us" can be found on his 1969 album simply titled "Engelbert Humperdinck."

"This Night" by Barry Harris and Chris Cox is from Engelbert's 1998 release "The Dance Album."
8. What does Merrilee Rush say to her lover? "There'll be no strings to bind your hands not if my love can't bind your heart. And there's no need to take a stand for it was I who chose to start. I see no need to take me home, I'm old enough to face the dawn. __________"

Answer: Just call me angel of the morning

Chip Taylor wrote "Angel of the Morning" and Merrilee Rush took the song to Number Seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., Number Two in Australia and New Zealand and Number One in Canada in 1968. She also earned a Grammy Nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance,.

With music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Sammy Cahn, "Call Me Irresponsible" was featured in the movie "Papa's Delicate Condition" and won the Academy Award for Best Song in 1964. It has been recorded most notably by Bobby Darin, Jack Jones and Frank Sinatra.

"Where Is the Love" was written by Ralph MacDonald and William Salter. Recorded by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway on their eponymous 1972 album, the song reached Number Five on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number One on both the Adult Contemporary and R&B charts, and won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

"Touch Me in the Morning" by Michael Masser and Ron Miller was a U.S. Number One hit for Diana Ross in 1973. Reaching Number One on both Billboard's Hot 100 and Adult contemporary chart, it was Diana's longest running chart success at twenty-one weeks.
9. With whom did Karen Carpenter have a one night stand, that she thought was so much more? "Long ago, and, oh, so far away I fell in love with you before the second show Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear But you're not really here, it's just the radio"

Answer: Superstar

"Superstar" by Leon Russell and Bonnie & Delaney Bramlett appeared on the Carpenters' eponymous 1971 album. As a single, it reached Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent two weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song also earned Richard and Karen a gold record.

"The Guitar Man" by David Gates is from Bread's 1972 album "Guitar Man." In the U.S., it reached Number Eleven on the Billboard Hot 100 but went to Number One on the Adult Contemporary chart.

"Studio Musician" was written by Rupert Holmes. It is from Barry Manilow's 1977 album "Barry Manilow Live."

I don't know any song called "Rock Star."
10. What could Ella Fitzgerald see? "I can't explain the silver rain that found me, or was that a moonlit vale? The music of the universe around me, or was that a nightingale? And then your arms miraculously found me. Suddenly the sky turned pale I could see __________"

Answer: the midnight sun

"One night stand" seems like a crude term to apply to the relationship described in this elegant and haunting song with music by Lionel Hampton and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Yet, as the bridge reveals, it was all just one wondrous night:

"Was there such a night? It's a thrill I still don't quite believe.
But after you were gone, there was still some stardust on my sleeve."

The First Lady of Song included "The Midnight Sun" on her 1964 release "The Johnny Mercer Songbook."

"Friendly Star" by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon was sung by Judy Garland in the 1948 MGM movie "Summer Stock." Michael Feinstein included the song on his 1993 album "Forever."

"I See Your Face Before Me" was written by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz. It can be found on Frank Sinatra's 1955 "In the Wee Small Hours" album. Andy Williams also included the song on his 1962 album "Warm and Willing."

"The Look of Love" is by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Sung by Dusty Springfield, it was featured in the 1967 movie "Casino Royale" and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song. Dusty rerecorded the song and released it on a single, the B-side of "Give Me Time." But perhaps the most recognizable recording of "The Look of Love" is by Sergio Mendez & Brasil 66, which reached Number Four in the U.S. in 1968. It has also been recorded by Barry Manilow, among others.

There is another song called "The Look of Love," this one written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn. It can be found on Frank Sinatra's 1964 album "Softly, As I Leave You."
