Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with an easy one - Mozart: Count Almaviva's estate near Seville, mid-18th century

Answer: "The Marriage of Figaro"

Mozart's opera was based on the highly controversial play "Le mariage de Figaro" by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. The play was part of a trilogy which also includes "Le barbier de Seville" and "La mere coupable".
2. Puccini: Peking of the legendary past

Answer: "Turandot"

Historical analyses have revealed that Puccini actually used several genuine Chinese themes in his score for "Turandot", including an imperial anthem and the tune from an ancient Chinese music box that Puccini heard.
3. Verdi: Jerusalem and Babylon ca. 586-87 B.C.

Answer: "Nabucco"

Nabucco, King of Babylon, was the first great role that Verdi created specifically for a baritone.
4. Donizetti: Scotland in the late 17th century

Answer: "Lucia di Lammermoor"

The libretto was written by Salvatore Cammarano, based on the novel "The Bride of Lammermoor" by Sir Walter Scott.
5. Janacek: Opens in a pub, a forest, in an undetermined time period

Answer: "The Cunning Little Vixen"

Considered Janacek's most impressionistic work, the score of "The Cunning Little Vixen" incorporated many themes based on natural sounds, such as chirping insects and birdsong.
6. Rossini: Venice, the mid-15th century

Answer: "Otello"

Verdi also composed an opera based on Shakespeare's "Othello", but Verdi's opera was set on the island of Cyprus at the end of the 15th century.
7. Wagner: The Grail castle "Montsalvat" in the northern mountains of Spain, mythological times.

Answer: "Parsifal"

Wagner based the name of his title character on an interpretation by Josephe Gorres: the Arabic "Fal-parsi", which means "the foolish, pure one."
8. Britten: The Borough, a small fishing village on the east coast of England, ca. 1880

Answer: "Peter Grimes"

The libretto was written by Montagu Slater, based on the poem "The Borough" by George Crabbe. Both Crabbe and Britten came from Suffolk.
9. Richard Strauss: Mycenae, after the Trojan War

Answer: "Elektra"

"Elektra" is unusual in that it consists of only one act, and contains no conventional pair of lovers. Elektra herself comes onstage near the beginning, and never leaves the stage until the end of the opera. It is considered one of the most demanding soprano roles ever written.
10. And now...the real test - John Estacio: Crowsnest Pass in Alberta, Canada, 1915-23.

Answer: "Filumena"

This brand new Canadian opera with music by John Estacio and libretto by John Murrell is based on a true story. It had its world-premiere performance in Calgary, Alberta in February of 2003.
