Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On Track five, "You Really Got Me", Ray collaborated with one of the greatest thrash metal bands in the world. Name the band.

Answer: Metallica

"You Really Got Me" was the first big hit for the Kinks, topping the UK charts and getting to number seven in the USA. Featuring some great power chords from Ray's brother Dave, it and its follow-up, "All Day And All Of The Night" are regularly quoted as great influences on many heavy metal and punk bands.
2. On the opening track, "Better Things", Ray duetted with one of the biggest names in rock music - who was this giant of rock?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

Named as Best Break-up Song by "American Songwriter" in 2011, "Better Things" was released as a single by The Kinks in 1981. Ray and The Boss make a great job of the song, as did The Fountains of Wayne on a tribute album to Ray and The Kinks, "This Is Where I Belong".
3. On Track seven, Ray recreates one of The Kinks' most iconic tracks, "Waterloo Sunset" and duets with another brilliant singer-songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Who was he?

Answer: Jackson Browne

Released in 1967, "Waterloo Sunset" is one of The Kinks' best-known and best-loved songs. Ray performed it at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. For decades it was believed that Terry and Julie, mentioned in the song, were the actors Terence Stamp and Julie Christie, who were making "Far From The Madding Crowd" at the time, but in later life Ray denied this.
4. The 12th track "David Watts", was never released as a single. On this version Ray duets with an indie band who backed him on his 2011 "Fall" tour of the USA. Name the band.

Answer: The 88

From the 1967 album "Something Else By The Kinks", "David Watts" was a controversial song, as it has homoerotic undertones, being about a schoolboy crush on a fellow pupil of that name. David Watts was a real person, an English concert promoter, who was gay and had a fixation for Ray's brother Dave.
5. On the album's title track, "See My Friends", Ray collaborates with a band from Texas. Name the band.

Answer: Spoon

Released in 1965, "See My Friends" was something of a departure for The Kinks, as it had a hint of the psychedelic rock about it, which Ray Davies, who wrote it, attributed to the fact that he wrote it after hearing Indian fishermen chanting during the band's tour of Asia.
6. On track six, "Lola", Ray collaborates with a young English singer/songwriter. Who is she?

Answer: Paloma Faith

One of The Kinks' most famous songs, "Lola" was released later in the band's career, and relates a meeting in a nightclub with Lola, who was either transvestite or transgender, and who introduced him/her-self in "a dark brown voice", and who "walked like a woman and talked like a man".
7. On Track 11, "This Is Where I Belong", Ray duets with the frontman of an alternative rock band who has also performed under the name Frank Black. Who is he?

Answer: Black Francis

"This Is Where I Belong", released in 1967 as the B-side of "Mister Pleasant", was for many years a little known song, but it remains one of Ray's favourites and he opened with it throughout his 2010 tour (except at Glastonbury, where he opened with "I Need You").
8. On Track two, "Celluloid Heroes", Ray is joined by two American greats, one on vocals and one on electric guitar. Who were they?

Answer: Jon Bon Jovi and Ritchie Sambora

"Celluloid Heroes" is about the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame and mentions a number of film stars - Greta Garbo, Rudolf Valentino, Marilyn Monroe, and Bela Lugosi. A live version, featuring Ray Davies, is on the flip side of Bon Jovi's 2002 release "Misunderstood".
9. Track 14, which is an amalgamation of two songs "All Day And All Of The Night" and "Destroyer", is a collaboration between Ray and one of The Smashing Pumpkins. Which one?

Answer: Billy Corgan

This track is unusual in a couple of ways; whilst "All Day And All Of The Night" was one of the Kinks' biggest hits, "Destroyer" was never released as a single in the UK (although it sounds familiar because it uses the main riff from "All Day"), and this track was put together via the internet - Davies and Corgan never met up.
10. Track three, my favourite, is another amalgamation of two songs: "Days" and "This Time Tomorrow". On it Davies collaborates with a band who won the 2013 Grammy for album of the year. Name the band.

Answer: Mumford and Sons

"Days" is one of the Kinks' best songs. Released in 1968, it has been covered by a number of artists including Petula Clark, James Last, Elvis Costello and, most notably, Kirsty MacColl, whose 1989 version reached the same position in the UK charts as the Kinks' own version. "This Time Tomorrow" was a track on the Kinks' longest-named album "Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One", released in 1970.
