Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Formed in 2009, supergroup The Dead Weather comprised The Kills vocalist Alison Mosshart, Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, bassist for The Raconteurs, Jack Lawrence and which other member of The Raconteurs on drums?

Answer: Jack White

What a supergroup to start a quiz with, and one which only came about through misfortune. The Kills were supporting The Raconteurs on tour, when Jack White lost his voice. Rather than cancel gigs, he asked Mosshart to step in and perform vocals and was so impressed by her, that he later asked her to record some stuff with him and Lawrence. Purely by chance, Fertita was at the studio, was asked to join in and The Dead Weather were born. They released their first album, "Horehound" in 2009 and were rewarded with immediate success as it went top 20 in Canada, UK, France and in USA on the Billboard 200.

They followed "Horehound" with the albums "Sea Of Cowards" (2010) and "Dodge And Burn" (2015), both of which repeated the success of their debut.
2. Prog rock heavyweights, John Wetton (King Crimson), Eddie Jobson (Roxy Music), Allan Holdsworth (Soft Machine) and Bill Bruford (Yes), formed a supergroup in 1977. What was the band called?

Answer: U.K.

Wetton and Bruford were members of King Crimson, when Robert Fripp decided to end the band, so once they had decided to form a band together they agreed that each would pick one other musician as a member.
Wetton brought in his old Roxy Music pal, Eddie Jobson, who was playing with Frank Zappa at the time and Bruford selected a musician he had used on his solo album, Allan Holdsworth.
U.K. released a self titled debut album in 1978, before musical differences arose and by the time of their second release, "Danger Money" in 1979, the band was a trio, with Bruford and Holdsworth having departed, being replaced by long time Frank Zappa drummer, Terry Bozzio.
U.K. disbanded in 1980, but reformed in 2012, with Jobson and Wetton using session musicians for a UK tour, and Bozzio joining them for the US leg.
3. "Around The Next Dream" (1994) was the only album released by supergroup BBM. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker provided the "BB" so who was the "M" of BBM?

Answer: Gary Moore

The album was a success in UK, reaching number nine on the album charts and spawning a minor hit single, in the track "Where In The World" (1994). The band made some good music, but were short lived, mainly due to the constant Cream comparisons taking their toll, with some reviewers even claiming Moore was a second rate Clapton.
Sadly Moore died in 2011, Bruce died in 2014 and Baker in 2019, meaning that this album is the only official release from the band.
4. The Circle are a hard rock supergroup, formed in 2014, consisting of Sammy Hagar on vocals, Michael Anthony on bass, Vic Johnson on guitar and which former drummer for UFO, Foreigner and Black Country Communion?

Answer: Jason Bonham

The Circle released their first album in 2015, a live album entitled "At Your Service" featuring 19 tracks, the majority of which were first heard on Hagar solo albums. Alongside these though were some tracks from when Hagar and Anthony were in Van Halen and five covers of Led Zeppelin tracks.
Their first studio album, "Space Between" was released in 2019, and was a huge success, its entry in the Billboard 200 chart in USA at number four making it the second highest chart debut for an album featuring Hagar.
5. Folk rockers Jim James (My Morning Jacket), M. Ward (She & Him), Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes) joined forces in 2004 to form which supergroup?

Answer: Monsters Of Folk

Although the band formed in 2004, commitments to their established bands meant that finding time together was rare, and it wasn't until 2009 that the band released their debut self titled album.
Boy, was it worth the wait though as the four members work so well together especially on tracks such as "Say Please", "Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.)" and for me, the standout track, "Losin Yo Head".
Critics loved the album too, with America's "USA Today" and "The Times" of UK giving it good reviews, but surely the best review was from another UK newspaper, "The Guardian" who stated, "It's enough to make you grow a beard with excitement".
6. If you have two Guns N' Roses as well as a Sex Pistol, what needs to be added to make Neurotic Outsiders?

Answer: A Duran Duran

Almost sounds like a recipe for some bizarre cocktail doesn't it, but then I guess that is in essence what a supergroup is. Neurotic Outsiders when originally formed in 1995 comprised Billy Idol and his guitarist, Steve Stevens along with Matt Sorum and Duff McKagen from Guns N' Roses, but this line up was short lived.
By the time the band got around to making an album in 1996, Idol and Stevens had been replaced by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and Duran Duran's John Taylor, to produce what I think was a much under rated album.
The best known track is probably "Jerk", but other tracks worth checking out include "Planet Earth", "Feelings Are Good" and, y'know what? Check out the whole album, this is a supergroup who really should have had more success.
7. GTR released their debut self titled album in 1986. The band was made up of Jonathan Mover (ex Marillion), Phil Spalding from Toyah's backing band, Max Bacon of Bronz, Steve Howe (Yes) and which former member of Genesis?

Answer: Steve Hackett

GTR's debut in 1986 was very well received, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200 in USA and stalling just outside the top 40 in UK. Sadly, musical differences between Howe and Hackett were brought to the fore during the tour to support the album and by 1987, Hackett had left the group.
In 1995, Max Bacon released his solo album, "The Higher You Climb" which features several tracks that were originally intended for a second GTR album.
8. "The Way Of The Fist" (2007), was the debut studio album from which band that featured former members of W.A.S.P., Alice Cooper, U.P.O and Ghost Machine?

Answer: Five Finger Death Punch

Although this may not seem like a typical supergroup line up, there was a wealth of experience on hand when Five Finger Death Punch were formed. Vocalist, Ivan Moody had released two albums with Ghost Machine, well received in the industrial metal community, while Zoltan Bathory had been a member of successful post grunge band U.P.O. Darrell Roberts had achieved European chart success with W.A.S.P on three of their albums, while Jeremy Spencer had also appeared with W.A.S.P in 2005. Jason Hook meanwhile had played on tracks by Alice Cooper, Vince Neil and Hilary Duff. "The Way Of The Fist" was not a huge commercial success, but as a debut album, it certainly paved the way, as their next seven albums all went top ten on the Billboard 200 in USA.
9. Two former members of Van Halen teamed up with a former Red Hot Chili Pepper and the man who temporarily replaced Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple to form which band in 2008?

Answer: Chickenfoot

The musicians in question are Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony from Van Halen, Chad Smith from RHCP and Joe Santriani, who is better known as a solo artist but was the man that Deep Purple turned to when Blackmore walked out on the band following a concert in Finland, and prior to the Japanese leg of the tour. Chickenfoot released their self titled debut album in 2009, and unsurprisingly given the line up, had success all around the world, including top 20 positions in Switzerland, Germany, Canada and USA on the Billboard 200.

Their second album, "Chickenfoot III" was released in 2011 and again met with success in the majority of countries
10. The Power Station had success in 1985 with their eponymous debut album. The band was made up of Duran Duran members, John Taylor and Andy Taylor as well as former Chic drummer Tony Thompson and which vocalist, best known as a solo artist?

Answer: Robert Palmer

The Power Station had huge success with their debut album which was a top 20 hit in UK, Australia and USA on the Billboard 200. It also spawned the hit single, "Some Like It Hot" (1985) which was a top 20 hit in many countries, and the follow up, a cover of the T-Rex classic, "Get It On" (1985) while not quite as successful, still sold well. In fighting led to the band breaking up shortly after their first album, but eventually in 1996, the band, minus John Taylor who had several personal problems to deal with, released a follow up album, "Living In Fear", but it would seem that their moment had passed and the album was not a commercial success.
