Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the earliest examples of funk rock can be heard on the song "Little Miss Lover" by what guitar legend?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

The song was recorded in 1967 by Hendrix and was his first blatantly funky effort. Years later, The Red Hot Chili Peppers would provide a new and biting interpretation of the classic.
2. Led Zeppelin, one of rock's super groups, was not even immune to funk's influence on rock and roll. What song, which appeared on the flip-side of the single "D'yer Mak'er" mixed in James Brown style funk licks?

Answer: The Crunge

Although all four songs appeared on Zep's 1973 album "Houses Of The Holy", "The Crunge" was a funky jam-style song that featured Page on the Stratocaster and using the whammy bar at the end of each phrase. Also, at the end of the song, Robert Plant asks, "Where's that confounded bridge?", which is a tribute to James Brown's live recording instruction to "...take it to the bridge".
3. What group led by George Clinton began defining the funk rock sub-genre (and funk in general) with their 1971 album "Maggot Brain"?

Answer: Funkadelic

Although Parliament, which evolved from The Parliaments, was Clinton's original band, Funkadelic, his other brainchild, was his first stab at a rock influenced album. The album is considered one of the best albums of all-time by many critics.
4. What singer and actress with a stage name similar to a famous actress, introduced funk to Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone and recorded funk rock records of her own in the seventies?

Answer: Betty Davis

Some consider Betty Davis, whose birth name is Betty Mabry, the first true pop diva. She was over-the-top, incredibly talented and much respected in the music community, even though she never scored an American pop hit.
5. Although they never scored a Top 40 Pop single, what Atlanta, Georgia based funk rock band recorded the classic "Baby Love"?

Answer: Mother's Finest

Mother's Finest is an interracial band fronted by Grace Kennedy. Although they never scored a Top 40 pop single, their music was a potent, unique and groovy blend of funk, rock and R&B.
6. Many funk rock groups attained chart success, but which of the following mainstream rock acts recorded a number one funk rock single?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The Stones' "Miss You" was their eighth chart topper in the US and quite a departure for them. Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" and Gary Wright's "My Love Is Alive" both peaked at number two. All three are considered funk rock classics.
7. Although not instantly thought of as a funk rock act, Rick James fits the genre upon closer listen. What did he name his brand of funk rock?

Answer: Punk funk

Although at first glance, James' music doesn't seem rocking, his roots are planted firmly in rock and roll. He once played with Neil Young and future Steppenwolf member Nick St. Nicholas in the Mynah Birds and did two stints as a Motown staff writer. Although the rock riffs dissipated as his music matured, early James was both biting and funky.
8. Funk rock received critical acclaim and a Grammy in 1989 for "Cult Of Personality" performed by what New York City band?

Answer: Living Colour

Living Colour is one of the pioneers of modern rock and much of their music incorporates funk into a unique musical collage of styles. They've won two Grammy Awards, an MTV Music Award and "Cult Of Personality" is their biggest hit, peaking at number thirteen on the pop chart. They are also a rarity in that they are one of a handful of all African-American rock bands.
9. As the nineties ushered in a more guitar oriented funk rock sound, what artist reworked a Guess Who classic into funk rock hit of his own?

Answer: Lenny Kravitz

Kravitz, the son of actress Roxie Roker who played Helen Willis on the TV series "The Jeffersons", has taken his musical influences from many diverse musical styles. "American Woman", a number one hit for The Guess Who, is perhaps his most blatantly funk rock effort.

Although it just missed being a Top 40 pop hit in the US (it peaked at number 49), it hit the top ten on both the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts in the states and the top twenty in Australia.
10. Rising out of the influence of The Clash's funky experimentation on their album "Sandinista", what Texas group created a hard-driving extension of funk rock called funkcore?

Answer: Big Boys

The Big Boys from Austin, Texas are lead by vocalist Randy "Biscuit" Turner. Some music critics have also dubbed this musical style, which is as much or more punk than funk, trashfunk. Other influential groups include MDC and Jungle Fever.
