Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following songs does NOT appear on any STYX album?

Answer: "Gravity"

Although none of these songs are Styx songs, only "Gravity" (from DDY's "Desert Moon" album) never appears on a Styx release. "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" and "High Enough" are both briefly covered on "Styxworld Live - 2001" as they were both co-written by Styx members. "Keep On Loving You" appears on the Styx/REO Speedwagon live album "Arch Allies".

Although Styx does not perform a single note of the song, it nonetheless DOES appear on a Styx album.
2. The studio track "Dear John" appears on which album?

Answer: Return To Paradise

Although "Return To Paradise" is a live album, it contains three studio tracks; "Dear John" is one of them.
3. According to the official STYX website, styxworld.com, what are the only two STYX studio albums to be released in the same year?

Answer: "Styx II" & "Serpent Is Rising"

"STYX" - 1972
"STYX II" - 1973

"Cornerstone" - 1979
"Paradise Theatre" - 1981

"Grand Illusion" - 1977
"Pieces Of Eight" - 1978

"STYX II" - 1973
"Serpent Is Rising" - 1973
4. Why was "Live At The River's Edge" not listed on the official STYX discography originally? (It has since been added.)

Answer: It is from the same concert as the "Arch Allies" live album.

"Arch Allies" was released in 2000. "At The River's Edge" was released in 2002. It is minus the REO Speedwagon tracks, of course. The album has "Lorelei" and "Everything Is Cool" in place of the two 10-piece tracks with REO. The songs are also in a SLIGHTLY different order.
5. The song "Haven't We Been Here Before" first appeared on which album?

Answer: Kilroy Was Here

Although Tommy hated writing for this album, this song remains one of his better ballads, eventually being included in the "Greatest Hits Part-2" album. Sorry if the "multi-platinum" hint threw you off. Many peolpe mistakenly assume the album was a financial flop.

This is because it didn't live up to the expectations of 3 million plus set by the previous four Styx albums, and led to the '84-'90 group hiatus over creative differences. The "Kilroy" album actually sold two and a half million copies.
6. What was the last album John Curulewski performed on? ("Greatest Hits" & "Best Of..." albums are, of course, excluded.)

Answer: Equinox

Many believe Shaw was on the "Equinox" album because he toured in support of it. Curulewski actually recorded the album and left the group before the tour.
7. Including "Live At The River's Edge", how many live albums had STYX released before going into the studio to record "Cyclorama"?

Answer: 5

1984 - "Caught In The Act - Live"

1997 - "Return To Paradise"

2000 - "Arch Allies - Live At Riverport" (w/REO Speedwagon)

2001 - "Styxworld Live - 2001"

2002 - "At The River's Edge - Live In St. Louis"

*2003 - "21st Century Live" was released AFTER "Cyclorama", and is the sixth STYX live album.
8. According to the credits in "Cyclorama", how many members of STYX were there upon the album's release?

Answer: 6

According to the credits there were six: Tommy Shaw, James Young, Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan, Glen Burtnik, and Chuck Panozzo. Although Chuck is battling the AIDS virus, and has been working on other priorities, he was still considered to be a member of Styx; albeit part-time.

As of the date this quiz was created, Chuck was still listed on the official Styx website as a member of the band.
9. The live album "Return To Paradise", features which STYX lineup?

Answer: DeYoung, Young, Shaw, C. Panozzo, Sucherman

It was DeYoung's last live album with Styx. Although Sucherman was replacing the late John Panozzo on drums, this album is considered to be one of the last from the second incarnation of Styx. (The first incarnation being the pre-Tommy Shaw line-up.)
10. "Edge Of The Century" was made without the benefit of which of the following band members?

Answer: Tommy Shaw - He had prior commitments

All of the aforementioned members had these repective problems at some point. However, Shaw was the only member not available for "EOTC". It was simply because he had joined Damn Yankees, and wanted to fulfill his commitments there.
11. Battling the AIDS virus and wanting to devote more time to AIDS awareness are the two major contributing factors that caused Chuck Panozzo to QUIT the group immediately following the release of "Brave New World".

Answer: False

Although he was "replaced" by Burtnik as a FULL-time member, these are the reasons he changed his status to PART-time after "BNW". Chuck has been a member since before the band was signed or even called Styx, and was still a member at the release of the 2003 album "Cyclorama". He never "QUIT" the group.
12. Which of the following songs does NOT appear on the 1973 release "Serpent Is Rising"?

Answer: "Rock & Roll Feeling"

"Rock & Roll Feeling" is from the 1974 "Man Of Miracles" album.
13. Which of the following is NOT a STYX album from the Wooden Nickel years?

Answer: "Bad For Good"

"Bad For Good" is not even a Styx album. It was Jim Steinman's only solo album and was originally intended for Meat Loaf as the sequel to "Bat Out Of Hell". When Meat Loaf was unable to record it Steinman recorded it himself. I thought the title had somewhat of an early-Styx feel, so I threw it in!
14. Which STYX album did the original studio track "Music Time" appear on?

Answer: "Caught In The Act - Live"

"Music Time" was the only studio track to appear on the "Caught In The Act" album.
15. The Styx album "Mr. Roboto" was released in what year?

Answer: None of these

"Mr. Roboto" WAS released in 1983; but it was a song on the "Kilroy Was Here" album. There was not a "Mr. Roboto" STYX album.
16. What was the last STYX studio album that John Panozzo performed on?

Answer: Edge Of The Century

Although John did record studio tracks that were later released on the two "Greatest Hits" albums, the last studio album he performed on was "EOTC"; "Brave New World" was released in 1999 three years after Panozzo's death. Condolences still come in almost daily at the official Styx website: http://styxworld.com/John.cfm.
17. Which of the following is NOT true about the "Grand Illusion" album?

Answer: It took exactly 77 days to make

"The Grand Illusion" was the first in an unprecidented string of four consecutive triple-platinum albums.
18. Which statement is NOT true about the STYX album "Pieces Of Eight"?

Answer: It had 8 tracks on it

"Pieces Of Eight" contained ten tracks, culminating with "Aku, Aku". "Renegade" was the eighth track on this album. Another notable song from the "Pieces" album is "Blue Collar Man"... Seems like '78 was a good year for Shaw.
19. Which of the following songs appears on the "Best Of STYX" album?

Answer: "What Has Come Between Us"

"Best Of STYX" was an RCA release of Wooden Nickel material. "Babe", "Haven't We Been Here Before", and "Lonely People" were all recorded on A&M AFTER the "Best Of Styx" was released. If you answered "Babe" you probably have this record confused with "Styx Greatest Hits".
20. Dennis DeYoung credited "Lady" with being the song that "...started this whole train rolling." It first appeared on the "STYX II" album. How much money did Wooden Nickel Records spend promoting this album the year it was released?

Answer: Less than $200

WLS playing the song "Lady" was what was responsible for the success of Styx II. The album actually did not catch on until years after its release because of the lack of marketing. Fortunately for us Styx toured, fans requested, WLS played it, and the program director vowed to play it every night until it became a hit. Every time it was played requests poured in to hear it again. Oh, the actual amount Wooden Nickel spent? $161; the cost of postage to mail it out.
21. How much money did Wooden Nickel Records spend promoting the "Equinox" album?

Answer: None

"Equinox" was the group's first A&M release; hence Wooden Nickel did not promote it, A&M did.
22. What was the first STYX album Glen Burtnik performed on?

Answer: Edge Of The Century

"Arch Allies" was the first album Burtnik appeared on the SECOND time he joined Styx. His first stint as a band member came in 1990 when he replaced Tommy Shaw for "Edge Of The Century".
23. What was the first STYX album Lawrence Gowan performed on?

Answer: "Arch Allies"

LG replaced Dennis LONG before the group would record its next studio album "Cyclorama". However, the group was fond of touring, and produced some live albums along the way; the first of which was "Arch Allies".
24. Which of the following songs is NOT on the "STYX II" album?

Answer: "What Has Come Between Us"

"What Has Come Between Us" is from the group's first album "Styx". It also appeared on "The Best Of Styx" in 1977.
25. Which studio album did "Boat On The River" first appear on?

Answer: Cornerstone

Although it got relatively little attention in the United States "Boat" was a big hit in Europe; so much so that it appears on the Holland release of "Caught In The Act" in place of "Don't Let It End". Speaking of ending, I hope you have enjoyed this quiz!
