Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "JY" refers to guitarist/vocalist James Young.

Answer: True

Young has been affectionately referred to as "JY" by Styx fans for years!
2. Band members and hardcore Styx fans are often referred to as what?

Answer: Stygians

One of the publishing companies credited on various albums is even called "Stygian Songs".
3. "EOTC" is something the band says at the end of every concert, and means "Every One Take Care"!

Answer: False

"EOTC" is short for "Edge Of The Century", one of the group's studio albums.
4. What is the most common nickname for the "Kilroy Was Here" album?

Answer: The "Kilroy" album

Although many do consider the album to be somewhat of a creative fiasco (it did send the group into hiatus), and many people do remember it as "The Mr. Roboto album", most Stygians use the term "Kilroy", or "The Kilroy Album" when shortening the actual title.
5. What does "BNW" stand for?

Answer: "Brave New World"

"BNW" is short for "Brave New World" which was the last album to feature Dennis DeYoung, and the first tour without him. The "BNW" album was the very last album to be released by that incarnation of Styx. The "BNW" tour marks the very beginning of the next incarnation of Styx. (The first incarnation is generally considered to be the Curulewski/Pre-Shaw years).
6. If you hear a Styx member refer to "our Dear Johns", he is likely referring to fans who stopped supporting the group after Dennis DeYoung's departure.

Answer: False

"Dear John" usually refers to late drummer and vocalist John Panozzo. When it is used plurally, it refers to late guitarist and singer, John Curulewski as well.
7. Which of the following is a common nickname for Dennis DeYoung?

Answer: DDY

Although DeYoung did play the Orin or Kilroy character on the "Kilroy Was Here" tour, these are the names of a character he played, not nicknames for the man himslef. The most common nicknames Stygians use are simply "Dennis", followed by "DDY", which is more commonly used in print media than verbalized.
8. The group's third album is commonly referred to as what?

Answer: "Serpent"

"Serpent" is short for "Serpent Is Rising". "Serpent" was also the full name of an RCA re-release of the same album years later.
9. "JC" is short for what?

Answer: John Curulewski

Although a less commonly used term, "JC" is frequently used by fans reminiscing about late guitarist/vocalist/writer John Curulewski. He left the group in 1975.
10. Who or what does "LG" refer to?

Answer: Lawrence Gowan

When a Styx fan uses the term "LG", he or she is usually referring to Lawrence Gowan, who replaced Dennis DeYoung in 1999.
11. "Miracles" refers to the group's fifth album.

Answer: False

"Miracles" is short for "Man Of Miracles", but it was their fourth album, not their fifth. (I couldn't resist throwing in at least one trick question!) As was the case with "Serpent", the name "Miracles" comes from an RCA re-release of the "Man Of Miracles" album with the shortened title. Aside from the cover art the "Miracles" release only differed from "Man Of Miracles" in that "Lies" was replaced with previously unreleased "Unfinished Song".
12. "Illusion" is short for the album "The Grand Illusion".

Answer: True

I know that one was pretty easy, but after trying to trick you in Q11 I thought I owed it to you to be straight-forward in this one!
13. "TS" is a term that was coined by "Rolling Stone" magazine and is frequently used by Styx fans to refer to Tommy Shaw.

Answer: False

Although "TS" HAS been used on styxworld.com, and in the liner design of the "Cornerstone" album to refer to Tommy, I just made up that stuff about Rolling Stone. Further, Stygians more commonly shorten Tommy Shaw to "Tommy" as "TS" could also stand for Todd Sucherman, the group's drummer.
14. "Ball" is a nickname for what?

Answer: The "Crystal Ball" album

Crystal Ball was released in 1976, and was the first album to feature Tommy Shaw. Incidentally, he wrote the title cut before being asked to audition for Styx in 1975.
15. Before joining Styx, Glen Burtnik had become so popular in New Jersey that marquees sometimes simply referred to him as "Glen" because his last name was not necessary for the fans to know who he was.

Answer: True

The publishers of the old 976-STYX newsletter ran into this phenomenon on a trip to New Jersey to see Glen play after he had been identified as Shaw's replacement in 1990. (Shaw was a member of Damn Yankees at the time, and had to be replaced; although he later returned to the group and eventually became the front man.)
