Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Vanilla Ice's real name?

Answer: Robert Van Winkle

Vanilla Ice was born Robert Matthew Van Winkle on October 31, 1967 in Dallas, Texas. He has stated that he has never known his biological father and was given the family name of the man his mother was married to at the time of his birth. Following the divorce of his parents when he was four years of age, he spent time living in various places between Dallas and Miami, Florida.

His experiences living in Florida were to become the basis for some of his hit songs.
2. Although he was interested in rap music, break dancing and street performances, Vanilla Ice had been successful in winning championships in which sport prior to his success as a musician?

Answer: Motocross

At the age of eight, Vanilla Ice began participating in motocross events. He won various trophies in the smallboy-class circuit as a youngster. By the time he was fifteen, he placed fifth at the AMA Amateur National Championships, one of the most prestigious motocross events in the United States.

At the Grand National Championships, he won three straight titles between the ages of 15 and 17. As an adult, he continued to participate in motocross using some of his earnings from his musical career to purchase various dirt bikes.
3. In 1989, Vanilla Ice would record his first album with the independent music label Ichiban Records under the album name "Hooked". In 1990, it was re-released by SBK Records under what name?

Answer: To The Extreme

The "To The Extreme" album is Vanilla Ice's most successful one to date. It featured fifteen tracks including the popular "Ice Ice Baby" and a cover of the Wild Cherry song "Play That Funky Music". When it was released under the Ichiban Records label it did not see mainstream success.

When released under the SBK label (a subsidiary of the EMI Group), it sold 15 million copies worldwide and spent sixteen weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.
4. Vanilla Ice only had one song that charted in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100.

Answer: False

Vanilla Ice's version of "Play That Funky Music" went to the number four spot on the US Billboard Charts in 1989. Music critics note however that he is best known for his hit song "Ice Ice Baby" that peaked at the number one spot the same year. By the technical definition of "one hit wonder", Vanilla Ice would not typically be considered one, but rather a "two hit wonder". Credible sources such as television's VH1, Top 40 Weekly and Billboard, however, all consider him a one hit wonder due to the fact that "Ice Ice Baby" is his "signature" song.
5. In 1994, Vanilla Ice got a tattoo of a leaf on his stomach. What were the circumstances regarding his decision to get this tattoo?

Answer: He had attempted suicide

On July 4, 1994 Vanilla Ice miraculously survived an overdose on heroin. He had been experiencing bouts of depression and was heavily addicted to other drugs including ecstasy and cocaine. In the 2013 article "Ice Shift Once Celebrated - And The Ridiculed - As Rapper Vanilla Ice, Rob Van Winkle Has Found Peace And Fulfillment In A Return To Motocross Racing" by Jeff Pearlman, Vanilla Ice stated that he had written a suicide note and then consumed large quantities of drugs.

His unhappiness was the cause of the attempt. "I had millions of dollars in the bank, I had a million-dollar home and a car and a boat, but I struggled to find happiness." The tattoo symbolized that he was going to "turn over a new leaf" and remain sober.
6. Vanilla Ice had once dated one of the 1980s most famous sex symbols and author of the controversial book "Sex". Who did he once have an eight month relationship with?

Answer: Madonna

Not only was Vanilla Ice in a relationship with the popular musician Madonna, he agreed to pose alongside her in the popular coffee table book "Sex". Unfortunately, the decision to do so ultimately hindered their relationship and they broke it off shortly after its release.

In an interview with "News of the World", Vanilla Ice stated that "We were in a relationship, yet it looked like she was screwing all these other people. I thought she was taking pictures and running around naked because she was like that.

Then when the book came out, I was so embarrassed and ashamed".
7. Which of the following soundtracks did Vanilla Ice appear on?

Answer: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze

Vanilla Ice once referred to his opportunity in recording a song for the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze" soundtrack as one of the "coolest experiences" of his life. Along with other musicians such as Spunkadelic, Dan Hartman, Cathy Dennis and Ya Kid K, Vanilla Ice was chosen to record the popular song "Ninja Rap".

The album received relatively poor ratings and was cited by the United Kingdom magazine "Select" as being "despicable". "Ninja Rap" unfortunately did not chart with any mainstream success and is rather seen as a "cult classic".
8. Vanilla Ice has stated that he considers himself a "Juggalo". What does this mean?

Answer: He is a fan of the band Insane Clown Posse

"Juggalo" are a fan group and subculture that have their own slang, idiosyncrasies and characteristics related to the band Insane Clown Posse. They often dress in clown attire and attend the Gathering of the Juggalos, an annual festival to celebrate the band. The concert spans five days and includes a variety of live performances, games, autographs and karaoke sessions.
9. In 2008, Vanilla Ice released the album "Vanilla Ice Is Back!" on the Cleopatra Records label. What is unique about this album?

Answer: It is an album of cover songs

The "Vanilla Ice Is Back!" album is listed as having thirteen tracks of which nine of them are covers of music by other musicians. Popular covered tracks on the album include Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier", House of Pain's "Jump Around", Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" and Cypress Hill's "Insane In The Brain". Also included on the album are four different mixes of Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby".

The album did not see any mainstream success and in reality is for true fans of Vanilla Ice. IGN reviewer Spence D. wrote that the album was an "embarrassing endeavor" and was "uninspired".
10. As a born again Christian, Vanilla Ice has refrained from legal issues since the early 1990s.

Answer: False

Vanilla Ice is no stranger to dealing with issues and the law. In 1988, he was arrested for illegal drag racing in Dallas, Texas and then in 1991 was arrested on a firearms charge in Los Angeles. Although he had promised to clean up his act after some personal issues in 1994, he had been involved in multiple legal situations in the 2000s.

These charges include an assault on his then wife Laura in 2001, driving with an expired license in 2007, another assault in 2008 and a burglary and grand theft charge in 2015.
