Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Georgia rockers R.E.M. released a song in 1994, based on an assault on a news reporter in 1986. Which song was it?

Answer: What's the Frequency, Kenneth?

The song was a hit most everywhere, except on the German "Media Control Chart", where it only reached number 74. It was based on a 1986 incident in New York City in which two people attacked CBS journalist Dan Rather, repeating "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"
2. Captain Marvel zapped this character right between the eyes. Ouch! In which Beatles song did this take place?

Answer: The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill

Included on the album "The Beatles" (aka "The White Album"), the song was written by John Lennon, and concerns an American who was staying at the ashram of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India while the Beatles were staying there. The American shot a tiger on a hunt, which Lennon thought was unnecessary.
3. Racing across the burning sands, which character was Ray Stevens singing about?

Answer: Ahab, the Arab

Pronounced Ay-rab to rhyme with Ahab, Stevens's song was a top-five hit in the U.S. in 1962. While capable of writing serious songs, such as "Everything Is Beautiful", Stevens is often remembered for his comedic recordings
4. Longing for someone not present is a common theme in song; which Bob Dylan song fits that description?

Answer: Visions of Johanna

"Visions of Johanna" was a song that required over a dozen takes at recording studios in two cities before Dylan was satisfied with it. It was on the 1966 album "Blonde on Blonde". "Johanna" has been hailed as some of Dylan's best writing; one critic praised "the allusiveness and subtlety of the language". Really, that sounds like it could have been said of many of Dylan's songs written after 1964.
5. Not usually thought of as a protest singer, which Elton John song might have given us that impression?

Answer: Postcards from Richard Nixon

From "The Captain & the Kid" CD released in 2006, "Postcards from Richard Nixon" wasn't really a critique about Nixon, it used his time period to frame a trip to the U.S.A., real or imagined, by two foreigners.
6. One of the founding groups of the Motown sound, the Four Tops had a big hit in 1967 with which song?

Answer: Bernadette

Unlike most groups, the Four Tops went for over four decades (from 1953 to 1997) before changing any of the group members. They have recorded on many record labels but their biggest success came while they were part of Motown Records.
7. Will this picture give you a clue to one of Rush's most popular songs?

Answer: Tom Sawyer

Though not a "monster hit", "Tom Sawyer" is one of Rush's most recognizable songs. A favorite of frontman Geddy Lee, it is a staple of classic rock radio. It was named after the Mark Twain character who famously got his friends to whitewash a fence for him.
8. With almost 70 years in the music business, Slim Dusty is probably best known by those outside of Australia for which song?

Answer: Waltzing Matilda

David Kirkpatrick started using the stage name Slim Dusty in 1938. "Waltzing Matilda" is a bush ballad about a swagman and his troubles after catching a jumbuck owned by a squatter. (Non-Aussies likely need a translation sheet when first listening to the song.) Dusty sang the song, called Australia's unofficial national anthem, as the finale at the closing ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
9. The first album by Heart had three hit songs on it. What was the name of the album?

Answer: Dreamboat Annie

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson started the group Heart in 1974. "Dreamboat Annie", released in 1975, contained the title song as well as "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man".
10. Probably the best-dressed man in the history of rock and roll, what is Gene Chandler's alter ego?

Answer: Duke of Earl

Gene Chandler was a sensation, appearing on "American Bandstand" and elsewhere in a full tuxedo, top hat and cape. "Duke of Earl" was a number one song in the U.S. on the "Billboard Hot 100" in 1961. Chandler has carried that persona with him ever since.
