He won his first best male actor Oscar for, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and his second for, "As Good as It Gets." He also has an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor from his performance in "Terms of Endearment."

Born December 31, 1937, Sir Anthony Hopkins is a character actor of tremendous talent and versatility. His range includes everything from Shakespeare to horror to action-adventure and back again. In his youth, he was the understudy for Laurence Olivier in stage productions at the Royal National Theater.

Although he's been nominated four times, Hopkins only has one Oscar, for his role as Hannibal Lector in the "Silence of the Lambs."

He established a delicious line of food products called "Newman's Own" and has donated 100% of the profits of this venture to charity (after taxes and overheads). Sadly, Newman passed away on September 26, 2008, after a long battle with lung cancer.

Born November 5, 1913, in Darjeeling, India, Vivien Leigh rose to fame as the incomparable Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind," a role she fought for desperately. Her success in the film earned her an Oscar for best actress during the 1939 Academy Awards (and the movie picked up eight total Academy Awards that year). Leigh's talents were further used in Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire", where she secured her second best actress Oscar. Sadly, some of the brightest stars burn our early, and Leigh succumbed to tuberculosis on July 8, 1967.

Born August 17, 1893, in Bushwick, New York, Mae West was more famous for her ballsy quips than her acting chops. Still, she was one of the original blonde bombshells and sex symbols. Mae West was in her late 30s before she started acting in Hollywood. Like many actors of that time, she started in vaudeville, and was dubbed the "queen of camp". West died on November 22, 1980, after stroke-related complications.

Born April 5, 1908, in Lowell, Massachusetts, Bette Davis commanded the silver screen for decades, becoming one of the first movie stars to accumulate ten Academy Award nominations. She won her first Oscar in 1935 for "Dangerous" and a second Oscar three years later for "Jezebel." She was best known for her work on "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" She was nominated for an Oscar for this role but lost to Anne Bancroft. Davis died on on October 6, 1989, after a battle with breast cancer.

9. Well known for chasing the twin Hollywood demons of drugs and alcohol, this actor gave rehab a second (and third) chance, eventually getting clean. Clean and sober, his star once again began to shine as he quipped, "I think I've been lucky, being my frequent appearances on Court TV have brought to me another level than just the actor guy."

Born April 4, 1965, in New York, New York, Robert Downey, Jr., was sometimes considered a member of the "brat pack" of the 1980s. It was at an early age that he was introduced to hard partying, and his addictions led to multiple arrests, incarcerations, and rehab.

When he finally hit rock bottom, he made a decision to get clean and committed to this task. He's been clean and sober since mid-2003. Since his commitment to his health, he has made a successful Hollywood comeback starring in popular box office hits such as "Iron Man", "Sherlock Holmes", and "Tropic Thunder" (for which he was given an Oscar nomination).

His work is extremely popular everywhere but with the Hollywood critics. Although he's been nominated for several major awards, he has won only one single Golden Globe for his work as "Sweeney Todd."
