I decided to do a quiz on this subject after reading the books "Katherine" and "Forever Amber". Although these books are both fiction they are based on some truth and provide fascinating insights into the roles of a royal mistress.

Answer: Anne Boleyn

Anne Boleyn was not the only Boleyn to be romatically involved with Henry VIII - her sister Mary was his mistress, too. It was alleged that their mother, Elizabeth Howard, was also a royal mistress, however when asked about it Henry said, "Never the mother!"

Part of the famous news story 'Camillagate'! Charles's and Camilla's relationship was said to span decades. They are now happily married.

It was claimed at some point that after Henry's failure to produce a legitimate male heir that he was preparing Henry Fitzroy for this job hence the reason for giving him the semi royal title of Duke of Richmond. However he died young and Henry went on to have Edward.

Answer: Jane Shore

Jane Shore or Elizabeth Shore was written about in Shakespeare's Richard III. She was one of Edward's favourite mistresses and remained so till his death.

Answer: Maria Anne Fitzherbert

Maria's royal lover was George IV and their marriage was declared invalid under The Royal Marriages Act. Even if permission had been asked it would have likely been declined as Maria was a Roman Catholic.

Katherine Swynford is the inspiration for the book Katherine I mentioned in the introduction. She became John's third wife and their four children were legitimised.
