He is also a musician and a writer, having published his debut bestselling novel "The Gun Seller" in 1996.

According to him, he became the USMC's youngest drill sergeant at the age of 17.

He fled South Africa in 1960 when the apartheid government banned gatherings of more than ten people. He first moved to London, then to the United States, where he had a lot of success.

He passed away in 2018 from prostate cancer.
