Although Amelia's parents lived in Kansas City, her mother went to her parents house in Atchison in order to give birth. Amelia moved to Des Moines Iowa with her father when he got work at a railway company.

Amelia was a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the St John Ambulance Brigade. She moved to Toronto in Canada and helped wounded Canadian soldiers in numerous hospitals.

She flew solo across the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland almost 4 years later on 20-21 May 1932. Charles Lindbergh, was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean (20-21 May 1927 from Long Island to Paris).

Settlement Houses were set up to assist new arrivals into America. She was employed in 1925 and taught the English language to immigrants, drove people to doctors appointments and acted as mentor to young girls. Her role increased greatly in her time there.

This was after "McCall's" magazine rejected Amelia because of her endorsement of Lucky Strike cigarettes, even though she did not smoke.

The landing gear collapsed on take off in Hawaii, damaging the plane but leaving everyone uninjured. She chose to fly east, across America, to allow the plane to be sorted before tackling ocean crossings. She left Miami on 1st June 1937 and disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on 2nd July 1937.

Although it is true the prevailing winds travel in that direction, it was not the main reason for the change; the Lockheed Electra could carry enough fuel to cross the Pacific Ocean and the airfield at Hawaii was appropriate.
