Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cleopatra of Egypt. She is famous for being beautiful, not actually Egyptian, selling out and destroying her country for a love affair with Rome, and of course killing herself with an asp. But did you know she's not the only Cleopatra? What was Cleopatra's regnal number?

Answer: VII

I guess Cleopatra I-VI were too well behaved to be famous. Cleopatra VII was, like all Cleopatras, actually of Macedonian descent and not Egyptian. She was also the last independent ruler of Egypt before it became a Roman province.
2. "The Great" is a great epithet to have. The most famous of people with this epithet, Alexander the Great, is certainly well deserving of his name, but he is in fact not the only Alexander of Macedon. Which is his regnal number?

Answer: III

Taking after his father, Phillip II, Alexander III of Macedon conquered the Greeks and created an army which would manage to take most of the civilized world at the time. It is not surprising the others weren't as famous.
3. Ivan the Terrible is one of the most famous or infamous of all Russian monarchs. Despite being the heroic leader of a nation falling apart, this Ivan was bestowed with the title "Terrible" while other Ivans get titles like "Great." Which Ivan was Ivan the Terrible?

Answer: IV

Ivan III was Ivan the Great. He shortly preceded Ivan the Terrible and helped make Russia a strong nation. Ivan IV was considered the first Czar of Russia and was stuck in a bad position. Despite his attempts at being a good monarch, many of his nobles gave him tons of relentless problems.

His title "Terrible" comes from his strength and the strictness of his rule. He is however more famous for becoming insane later on in life and killing his son and heir-apparent in a fit of rage.
4. Nebuchadnezzar is one of the most famous kings of ancient Mesopotamia. He was king of the Chaldean (Neo-Babylonian) Empire and was responsible for conquering the Kingdom of Judah in the Bible. He is also responsible for the construction of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. There were actually four Nebuchadnezzars, but which one is this particular one?

Answer: II

Nebuchadnezzar I was quite significant and led to the Chaldeans becoming powerful, but sadly he is not well remembered. The other two are minor kings who later rebelled against Persian rule but failed.
5. The Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom who ascended the throne in 1952 is not the only Queen of England by that name. What is the regnal number of this queen who succeeded her father, George VI?

Answer: II

There have been a few Queen Elizabeths over all of Europe, but Elizabeth Windsor was only the second in the United Kingdom. The first one, also known as the Virgin Queen, is one of the most famous and significant queens in British history. There have also been consorts to kings named Elizabeth, but since they never ruled as monarch, they are not given a regnal number.
6. Ramesses the Great of Egypt spawned a bit of a following after himself. In fact nearly the entire 20th Dynasty of ancient Egypt was named after him. In the end who was the last pharaoh named Ramesses? (or if you would prefer, how many total pharaohs were named Ramesses?)

Answer: XI

Ramesses I and II (the Great) were pharaohs of the 19th Dynasty, but after them nearly all pharaohs of the 20th Dynasty were named Ramesses. This ended in Ramesses XI. The most important Ramesses other than Ramesses II was Ramesses III who was famous for fighting the Sea Peoples.
7. It is little known that Montezuma, the leader of the Aztecs when the Spanish first found them, is not the only Montezuma. What is this particular one's regnal number?

Answer: II

Montezuma I of the Aztecs was fairly important himself, being responsible for the consolidation of the Aztec Empire and helping it grow to power. Despite this, Montezuma II gets much more fame for being in power when Cortes and the Spanish first met the Aztecs.
8. Henry is one of the more popular names of English kings. This one, in particular, is probably remembered above all others. Among other things, this King Henry was responsible for the separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church. What was the regnal number of this excommunicated king of England?

Answer: VIII

The "other things" in the question refer to Henry VIII's six marriages, the issue with Anne Boleyn, and his most famous children Queen Elizabeth I and Bloody Mary (Queen Mary I). Henry is not always remembered in a very positive light by many people.
9. Of all the Persian emperors in history, the one that stands out most is Xerxes the Great. Despite being a powerful Persian king, he is best known for his failure. It was this Xerxes that invaded Greece but failed to conquer it despite having an enormous advantage in numbers. He, however, is not the only Xerxes in Persian history. What was Xerxes the Great's regnal number?

Answer: I

The Persian war against the Greeks had been going on for a while before this invasion by Xerxes. Xerxes then followed up with another invasion that was destroyed primarily at the Battle of Thermopylae and Salamis.

Answer: XII

Despite being King Charles XII, he was not actually the 12th Charles of Sweden. He simply was the successor to Charles XI who gave himself that number based on his own determination of Swedish history.
12. Assyria was a very important and powerful kingdom in the first millennium BCE, but sadly most people know nothing or very little about it. One of the most prominent of all Assyrian Kings is Tiglath-Pileser. There are of course multiple people with this name, but this one was the founder of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. He may be better known to westerners as the king who was responsible for conquering most of the Kingdom of Israel in the Bible. What was his regnal number?
