Lucy liked to be called Maud by her friends and family.

Her first book was "Anne of Green Gables," and her others include seven more "Anne" books, the Emily trilogy, the Avonlea series, two novels for adults, an autobiography and the novel "The Story Girl."

Most of her books were inspired by the lovely scenery on P.E.I.

Lucy fell in love with a poor farmer named Herman Leard, a man who was not considered a suitable match for her. At the same time, she was engaged to Edwin Simpson, her second cousin. Lucy knew that breaking the engagement would be disgraceful for her family, but she did it anyway. Shortly after, her relationship with Leard also ended. Several years later, in 1911, Lucy married a minister named Ewan MacDonald.

He was a much more suitable match than any of Lucy's other beaux, and she respected him.

However, she never loved him "with a passion."

Answer: Yes, 19 thousand copies were sold in five months

Montgomery was very surprised and delighted that her book had sold so well. She immediately wrote a sequel, "Anne of Avonlea."
8. Did L.M. Montgomery have any siblings?

Answer: No, she was an only child

Montgomery was an only child her entire life, and had no neighborhood playmates until the age of eight. However, she had two imaginary friends, and loved to name plants, flowers, and trees, (much like the heroines of her novels).
9. L.M. Montgomery was not recognized as a great writer until after her death in 1942.

Despite the popularity of all of her books, Montgomery was "pushed to the sidelines" by critics, and not truly recognized as a great Canadian writer until the 1970s. However, a poll taken in 1947 revealed that in Canada she was nearly as beloved as Charles Dickens.

After her death, all of her books remained popular around the world. "Anne of Green Gables" has sold millions of copies and been translated into seventeen languages. It has also been adapted for the screen and stage, inspiring numerous ballets, musicals, television specials, and films.
