Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one was a member of the Twelve Disciples?

Answer: Bartholomew

Bartholomew, who was also known as Nathanael, is the correct answer. His name appears in Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:14 and Acts 1:13. However, in John 1:45 he is referred to as Nathanael.

Nathanael is best known for being the first of the Twelve Disciples to refer to Jesus as the Son of God, as per John 1:49.
2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one was a "notorious" prisoner who was released over Jesus?

Answer: Barabbas

Barabbas is the correct answer. Details about Barabbas being released over Jesus can be found in Matthew 27:15-26, Mark 15:6-15, Luke 23:13-25 and John 18:39-40.

In a nutshell, Jesus appeared before Pilate after His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane and it was determined He had done nothing wrong. Seeking a way out, Pilate realized the Passover was approaching and as per the custom of the day, one prisoner would be released. As a result, he asked the people if they wanted to have Jesus released.

However, Scripture states the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes they should ask for the release of Barabbas and "destroy Jesus". According to Matthew 27:16, Barabbas was a "notorious prisoner".

When Pilate saw the crowd was adamant Barabbas should be released and Jesus crucified, he took water and washed his hands saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it."
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one was a blind man who was miraculously healed by Jesus?

Answer: Bartimaeus

Bartimaeus was a blind beggar who was miraculously able to see after he met Jesus at Jericho. The account of the miracle can be found in Mark 10:46-52.

Not much is known about the personal life of Bartimaeus apart from the fact he was the son of Timaeus.

What I find highly interesting in the account is the fact Bartimaeus shouted, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" However, the crowd surrounding Jesus told the blind beggar to be quiet. Undeterred, Bartimaeus shouted out all the louder, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

When Jesus heard Bartimaeus was trying to get His attention, He requested Bartimaeus be brought to Him. And boy, what a change in the crowd. The same people who had been telling Bartimaeus to be quiet, had a dramatic change of heart when Jesus acknowledged him.

According to Verse 49, the crowd called the blind man, saying to him, "Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you."

Moments later, Bartimaeus would be able to see.

For the record, Son of David is a Messianic term from the Old Testament.
4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one is associated with being a key ally of David when he was facing a bloody coup attempt?

Answer: Barzillai

Barzillai was a key ally of David when he was facing a coup attempt which resulted in Israel being plunged into a bloody civil war. One side favored David while the other side favored his son Absalom as king.

For a while, Absalom had the upper hand, with David and his supporters forced to flee to Mananaim to save their lives. It was in Mananaim that Barzillai played a pivotal role in turning the tide in the war in David's favor.

2 Samuel 17:27-29 tells of Barzillai providing David with much more than moral support. The passage states Barzillai provided David and his supporters with a wide variety of supplies, everything from beds to cooking vessels, as well as a large quantity of food.
5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one served as leader of Israel's military during the time of Deborah?

Answer: Barak

Barak was the commander of the Israelite army during the time Deborah was judge. The two formed a dynamic duo who led the Israelites to a resounding military victory over their arch-enemies, the Canaanites.

For details about Barak and Deborah and their military victory over Jabin, king of Canaan, see Judges 4.
6. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one was a false prophet and sorcerer in the New Testament?

Answer: Bar-Jesus

Bar-Jesus, who was also known as Elymas, is the correct answer. According to Acts 13:6-12, Paul encountered Bar-Jesus, a false prophet and a sorcerer, on the island of Cyprus.

When Bar-Jesus did everything in his power to oppose the Gospel message, Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, opted to fight back. The passage tells of Paul rendering Bar-Jesus temporarily blind.
7. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one, according to Job 32:2, was the father of Elihu, a man who attempted to comfort Job in his time of great need?

Answer: Barachel

Elihu was the son of Barachel, but not much is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to Job 32:2, Barachel was a Buzite.

Using the NKJV, Barachel's name appears twice in the Old Testament and in both occasions it simply makes reference to the fact he was the father of Elihu.
8. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one is associated with the disciple Simon Peter?

Answer: Bar-Jonah

Jesus referred to Peter as Simon Bar-Jonah with Jesus using the name immediately after Peter confessed He was "the Christ, the Son of the living God." Christ's response to Peter's declaration is recorded in Matthew 16:17. The verse in the NKJV states, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven."

Bar is Aramaic for 'son', according to Biblestudytools.com. In other words, Jesus was calling Peter 'Simon, the Son of Jonah'.

Jesus also gave Peter the nickname Cephas which means stone, or rock, as per John 1:42.
9. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one was Jeremiah's faithful scribe as well as the writer of a book in the Catholic Bible?

Answer: Baruch

Baruch was a faithful friend and scribe for Jeremiah, a major prophet in the Old Testament. He was the son of Neriah and of the tribe of Judah, and served Jeremiah during an extremely turbulent time in Jerusalem's history. Baruch was responsible for transcribing the divine messages of Jeremiah.

Using the NKJV, Baruch's name appears no less than twenty-one times in chapters 32, 36, 43 and 45.

He was also the writer of a book that appears in the Catholic Bible.
10. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one was a worker in the early church who was known as the 'Son of Encouragement'?

Answer: Barnabas

According to Acts 4:36, Barnabas was known as the 'Son of Encouragement'. His original name was Joses in the NKJV (Joseph in the NIV). However, he was named Barnabas because he was constantly encouraging others. Scripture states Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus.

He served alongside the likes of Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and John Mark, believed to be the author of the Gospel of Mark.
