In 1929 Claude Green-bey broke off from the group to start his own movement. He was found murdered in the Temple hall a couple months later. After Noble Drew Ali's death, his brother, Edward Mealy El claimed leadership. David Ford El, Noble Ali's chauffeur, also claimed leadership because of a vision he had. The Temple's Unity Conference selected Kirkman Bey as Noble Ali's successor.
