Clitherow had two priest holes in her home where she shielded several priests until her plot was discovered in 1586. 7. Albertus Magnus was one of the great scholars of the Roman Catholic Church, so much so that he was given the moniker "Albert the _____".

From Quiz Hot Under the Collar

Answer: Great

Albertus was born near the end of the 12th century (though sadly the exact date is not known) and was drawn to the Dominican order where he became a friar. In 1223 he commenced his studies in theology at Bologna and it was here that his profound intellect was recognised. It wasn't long before the student became the teacher and began to serve the Church as a lecturer. In 1245 he was moved to Paris as the Master of Theology and one of the students on whom he would have an enormous impact was Thomas Aquinas. In 1260 he was appointed Bishop of Regensburg by Pope Alexander IV. So humble was he that, despite his age, he refused the services of a horse to move about the parish, instead he would walk. This culminated in locals calling him the "Boots Bishop". Beyond his faith Albertus was a prolific writer and produced thirty eight volumes of observations, summarisations and deductions on a wide range of topics that included zoology, astronomy, alchemy, law, mineralogy, friendship and love. Magnus passed away in 1280 and was beatified in 1622. Pope Pius XI declared him a saint in 1931 and, at the same time, bestowed the rare honour of declaring him a Doctor of the Church for his contributions to theology. Albertus is the patron saint of scientists. This question was created by Phoenix Rising member pollucci19.

8. Akhnaton (also spelled Akhenaten) was a pharaoh of the 18th dynasty who attempted to replace traditional Egyptian polytheism with the worship of a single figure. What was the name of this deity associated with the disc of the sun?

From Quiz Akhnaton

Answer: Aten

The full name of Akhnaton's god was 'The Rahorus who rejoices in the horizon, in his/her Name of the Light which is seen in the sun disc', but it was usually shortened to Aten. This figure was a development from earlier gods (Rahorus evolved as an amalgamation of Ra and Horus) and adapted their symbols to display its supremacy over all other gods, as the sun is superior to all other stars. This is sometimes considered one of the earliest monotheistic (having one god) religions, although others consider it to be henotheistic (many gods with one of them reigning supreme). Amenhotep IV (as he was known until the fifth year of his rule) changed his name to Akhnaton, meaning 'effective spirit of Aten', when he decided to introduce his new religious vision. Worship of Aten was effected during his reign, but within a dozen years of his death it had disappeared. Akhnaton himself was little remembered until the 18th century discovery of the ruins of Akhetaten, the city he built for the worship of Aten. Further interest was stimulated by the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, who was shown by DNA testing in 2010 to be Akhnaton's son. Nut was an Egyptian god associated with the sky, Seth with the desert, and Bastet with cats.

26. It is widely known that Our Lady is reported to have appeared to Saint Bernadette at Lourdes. Who provided the main opposition to the establishment of the shrine at Lourdes?

From Quiz Our Lady Help of Christians

Answer: the French authorities

This happened in 1858 in France. During the time that the visions were being reported and just afterwards, the French authorities tried to close the shrine, eventually deeming it an illegal place to worship. Their attempts failed. The local people ignored this warning, even when the site was declared unsanitary (the apparitions were reported in a place used, inter alia, as a garbage dump, and the spring of water being used for cures came from this ground), people kept coming to the site. They broke down barriers erected by the authorities. When the Governess of Napoleon's children arrived and saw the State's attempts to blockade the shrine, things changed. She reported back to Napoleon and the blockade of the shrine was lifted (it is believed that one of Napoleon's children was cured by water from a spring Mary had created at the shrine. That is why the Governess had ventured to go there). Even today masses of miracles, arising from Mary's spring, are reported, both of a spiritual and a physical nature. Very few in comparison are recognized as proven by the Roman Catholic Church. Often people appreciate the miracles, but do not want to go through strenuous tests of authenticity. On other occasions, however, when missing thigh bones are miraculously replaced etc., the proof is too obvious to be ignored by the Roman Catholic church. The Roman Catholic Church are clearly very aware of powerful sectors in society who will ridicule any false claims of miracles. The shrine is still predominantly Roman Catholic only. Mary has been reported appearing many times in France, and the French State seems to recognize the right to pray in Lourdes and other shrines.
