Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The centurion who was a follower of Jesus Christ

Answer: Who is Cornelius?

Cornelius is the correct answer. Acts 10 in the NKJV tells of him being a centurion of the Italian Regiment as well as a "devout man and one who feared God with all his household." The chapter goes on to tell of Peter baptizing Cornelius and his household. However, no details are given as to the number of people in Cornelius' household.
2. The forerunner of Christ who had his birth foretold by an angel

Answer: Who is John the Baptist?

The birth of John the Baptist was foretold by the angel Gabriel, as per Luke 1:5-25. According to Scripture, John's parents Zacharias and Elizabeth were elderly and Elizabeth had been unable to conceive all her life. Matthew 3:1-12 tells of John the Baptist preparing the way for Christ.

Meanwhile, Luke 1:26-38 provides an account of Gabriel foretelling the birth of Jesus.

(In the NIV, Zecharias is known as Zechariah.)
3. The father of two members of the original Twelve Disciples

Answer: Who is Zebedee?

Zebedee was the father of John and James, two members of the original Twelve Disciples. According to Matthew 4:21, Zebedee was a fisherman, just like his two sons. It is believed his wife's name was Salome. Although Zebedee's name appears more than ten times in the NKJV, little is known about him because in each case he is mentioned in passing reference with the verses simply stating he was the father of John and James.
4. A Jewish woman married to a Gentile

Answer: Who is Eunice?

Eunice was the mother of Timothy, a worker in the early church, and according to Acts 16:1 she was Jewish and her husband was Greek. However, no name is given for Eunice's husband. According to 2 Timothy 1:5, Eunice's mother was Lois. Little is known about Eunice as she is mentioned in passing reference in Scripture.
5. A man who saw the resurrected Christ on the road to Emmaus

Answer: Who is Cleopas?

While walking on the road to Emmaus, Cleopas and an unnamed companion saw the resurrected Christ, according to Luke 24:13-34. Initially Cleopas and his companion did not realize it was Christ and it was only after they invited Him into their home "their eyes were opened and they knew Him," as per the NKJV.

The account is one of a number of resurrection appearances of Christ in the four Gospels.
6. The member of the early church who was the treasurer for the city of Corinth

Answer: Who is Erastus?

Erastus was a member of the early church and the treasurer for the city of Corinth, according to Romans 16:23 in the NKJV. (In the KJV, Erastus is described as the chamberlain of the city while in the NIV he is described as the city's director public works.)

The name Erastus also appears in Acts 19:22 and 2 Timothy 4:20 and it is generally believed it is the same person. However, there is no way of knowing for certain.
7. A woman mentioned in the salutation of Philemon

Answer: Who is Apphia?

Paul, the writer of Philemon, mentions Apphia in the salutation of his letter. In Philemon 1:1-2, Paul writes in the NKJV: "Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house"

No one knows for certain, but many people believe Apphia was the wife of Philemon and Archippus was their son.

Philemon was the owner of the run-away slave Onesimus and in his letter, Paul urges Philemon to accept Onesimus back as an equal in Christ.
8. A worker in the early church who came from Cyrene, a city in northern Africa

Answer: Who is Lucius?

Lucius of Cyrene was a worker in the early church at Antioch, along with Barnabas and Paul, who was called Saul at the time. Apart from the fact he came from Cyrene, little is known about Lucius as he is mentioned in only Acts 13:1 and Romans 16:21.

Cyrene was a Greek city in eastern Libya. The city is also known for being the home of Simon of Cyrene, the man who carried the cross for Jesus, as per Matthew 27:32.
9. The island John was on when he wrote Revelation

Answer: What is Patmos?

John was on the island of Patmos when he wrote Revelation, as per Revelation 1:9. Patmos is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. According to Wikipedia, the island had a population of 2,998 people in 2011. Revelation is the final book in the New Testament of the Christian Bible.
10. A book in the KJV consisting of thirteen chapters

Answer: What is Hebrews?

Using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV, Hebrews is one of two books in the New Testament consisting of thirteen chapters. The other New Testament book with thirteen chapters is 2 Corinthians.

No one knows for certain who wrote Hebrews. Some scholars believe Paul wrote the book but others strongly dispute such a belief.
