Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. God appeared to this man in a dream and bade him ask for whatever he wanted. The man asked for a discerning heart and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.

Answer: Solomon

The passage that describes Solomon's dream is found in 1 Kings 3:5-15. Here are a couple of verses to show that Solomon not only received what he asked for, but more.

v.5 - At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, "Ask what I shall give you."

v.9 - "Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?"

v.10-14 - It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him, "Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days. And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days."
2. This man's dream involved an object like a great sheet being lowered to the ground, covered with all types of animals. A voice then told him to kill and eat the animals. He refused, but then the voice said, "What God has made clean, do not call common."

Answer: Peter

It's hard to say whether this qualifies as a dream or as a vision, you can be the judge in reading the passage. The significance of this dream for Peter and the new Christian church was that Jesus' message was not only for the Jews, but for the Gentiles as well.

The dream in Acts 10:10-16 - And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. And there came a voice to him: "Rise, Peter; kill and eat." But Peter said, "By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean." And the voice came to him again a second time, "What God has made clean, do not call common." This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.

In his report to the Church in Acts 11, Peter concludes in v.17-18 - If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?" When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, "Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life."
3. He dreamed of a stairway reaching from the earth up to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it.

Answer: Jacob

Jacob, after stealing the blessing meant for his older brother Esau, is sent to the house of Laban, his uncle, to find a wife from among his cousins, rather than a Canaanite woman. Along the way there, he had this dream, found in Genesis 28:

v.12-15 - And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
4. An angel appeared to this man in a dream and told him to take his family and flee to Egypt.

Answer: Joseph (New Testament)

Joseph actually had four dreams at different times. The first was to tell him not to be afraid to marry his betrothed, despite her impending pregnancy. The second time warned Joseph to leave Bethlehem and flee to Egypt before Herod began his baby killing spree. A third dream told him that Herod had died, and he could return to Israel. Then a last dream warned Joseph to steer clear of Judea, because Herod's son reigned there.

The second of the dreams, about fleeing to Egypt, can be found in Matthew 2:

v.13-15 - Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
5. He dreamed of the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowing down to him.

Answer: Joseph (Old Testament)

Genesis 37 tells of two dreams Joseph, son of Israel, had regarding his family one day bowing to him. One dream involved sheaves of wheat, while the other was with the sun, moon and stars. These dreams were fulfilled when Joseph rose to a position of power in Egypt. Here is the celestial dream:

v.9-11 - Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, "Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me." But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?" And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.
6. In his dream, this man had three baskets of baked goods on his head, and birds were eating the baking from the top basket that was meant for his king.

Answer: Pharaoh's Baker

Joseph earned himself a bit of a reputation for being able to interpret dreams, and his rising star in Egypt began while he was in jail (after the incident with Potiphar's wife) with the interpretation of the dreams of two fellow prisoners. Unfortunately for the baker, his dream foretold his death in three days.

Genesis 40:16-19 - When the chief baker saw that the interpretation [of the cupbearer's dream] was favorable, he said to Joseph, "I also had a dream: there were three cake baskets on my head, and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my head." And Joseph answered and said, "This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days. In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head-from you!-and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat the flesh from you."
7. This man dreamed of a giant statue made of gold, with chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet made partly of iron and partly of baked clay.

Answer: Nebuchadnezzar

Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon, had troubling dreams (in Daniel 2), but would not tell any of his magicians, enchanters, nor sorcerers the details of the dream, demanding only an explanation of what his dream meant. None of them could help until Daniel was called. He was able to not only tell Nebuchadnezzar what the dream was, but that it told the future of a number of kingdoms to come.

v.31-35 - "You saw, O king, and behold, a great image. This image, mighty and of exceeding brightness, stood before you, and its appearance was frightening. The head of this image was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its middle and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. As you looked, a stone was cut out by no human hand, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth."
8. In his dream, this man watched three branches on a vine ripen with grapes, which he then pressed into a cup and gave to his king.

Answer: Pharaoh's Cupbearer

Joseph's other cellmate, the cupbearer to the King of Egypt, told of his dream regarding three branches from a vine and pressing fresh grapes into a cup for Pharaoh. With the favourable interpretation, Joseph asked the cupbearer to remember him to the Pharaoh in the future.

Genesis 40:9-13 - So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said to him, "In my dream there was a vine before me, and on the vine there were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters ripened into grapes. Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand." Then Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days. In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office, and you shall place Pharaoh's cup in his hand as formerly, when you were his cupbearer."
9. His apocalyptic dream consisted of four great beasts coming up out of the sea: one like a lion with the wings of an eagle; one like a bear; one like a leopard, but with four wings and four heads; and one fearsome beast with ten horns and iron teeth.

Answer: Daniel

Daniel's dream from Daniel 7 is a prophetic dream of the end times. The four animals represent four kingdoms, and these kingdoms will be judged by God.

v.2-8 - Daniel declared, "I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. The first was like a lion and had eagles' wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, 'Arise, devour much flesh.' After this I looked, and behold, another, like a leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things."
10. In this man's dream, he was standing on the banks of the Nile when he saw seven scrawny and ugly cows consume seven fat and sleek cows.

Answer: Pharaoh

After Joseph's interpretation of the Pharaoh's cupbearer's dream, it took some time for the story to actually reach Pharaoh's ears. When Pharaoh had a dream that he could not interpret, his cupbearer finally remembered Joseph, and Joseph was called out of prison to show what he could do. His interpretation of the dream with the cows (along with a second dream showing seven plump ears of grain being swallowed by seven thin ones) meant prosperity for both Egypt and for Joseph.

Genesis 41:1-7 - After two whole years [after the cupbearer's dream], Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the Nile, and behold, there came up out of the Nile seven cows attractive and plump, and they fed in the reed grass. And behold, seven other cows, ugly and thin, came up out of the Nile after them, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile. And the ugly, thin cows ate up the seven attractive, plump cows. And Pharaoh awoke. And he fell asleep and dreamed a second time. And behold, seven ears of grain, plump and good, were growing on one stalk. And behold, after them sprouted seven ears, thin and blighted by the east wind. And the thin ears swallowed up the seven plump, full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.
