Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. About 5000 years ago, Egyptians obtained a powder by heating gypsum (calcium sulphate) in open air fires. This powder was used for cementing blocks of their monuments. Chemically, it is calcium sulphate hemihydrate. What is it more commonly known as?

Answer: Plaster of Paris

Plaster of Paris is so called because it is made by using gypsum, which was mainly found in Montmartre in Paris.

It's also used for plaster casts to support broken bones, sealing gaps in air-sensitive chemical apparatus and for decorative purposes.
2. Which of the following is a defect of vision?

Answer: Myopia

Myopia, or near-sightedness, is when you can't see things at any distance from you. It can be corrected using diverging (concave) lens.

Europia does not exist though Europe certainly does.

Ethiopia is a country in East Africa.

Eatopia is an eating joint in my hometown, and is worth a visit any day.
3. What is a cathode?

Answer: the electrode where reduction occurs

The basic definition of a cathode is that it is the site of reduction. It's called by this name as cations move towards it.

In electrochemical cells like dry cells which are used in torches, it is the positive electrode whereas in electrolytic cells (used for electro-plating and electro-refining) it is the negative electrode.
4. Which of these conditions is necessary for combustion to occur?

Answer: all these conditions are necessary

To stop combustion, we try to violate one or more of these conditions.

For example, when you turn off the knob of the LPG cylinder in the kitchen, you're actually cutting off the supply of LPG, the fuel.

When you blow on a birthday candle, you are trying to lower the temperature of the wick below the ignition temperature.

Carbon dioxide emitted by fire extinguishers surrounds the combustible substance and cuts off the supply of oxygen to stop combustion.
5. Where was the first atomic bomb exploded by the U.S.A.?

Answer: Alamogordo, New Mexico

This question is referring to the Trinity Test explosion conducted in July 16, 1945.

The Hiroshima explosion took place on August 6, and the Nagasaki one on August 9.

Bikini Atoll is the place where U.S.A. carried out the first subsurface detonation on June 30, 1946.
6. The muscle fibers of the heart are specialized at certain parts of the heart to generate electric currents that in turn cause the normal rhythmic heartbeats. Which instrument is it that records these electrical changes during heartbeat?

Answer: electrocardiograph

An electrocardiograph is the instrument whereas electrocardiogram is the graphic recording which indicates the area of malfunctioning, if any.

I'm sure you must have seen this instrument in some movie or television program, if not in real life.
7. A reflex action is an unconscious and involuntary response of muscles and glands to a stimulus. Which of the following is NOT a reflex action?

Answer: netsurfing

No, medical science has confirmed that surfing on the net is NOT involuntary, so better not use that excuse to spend all your time on the net.
8. When I say 'Tom is an alcoholic', which alcohol am I referring to?

Answer: ethyl alcohol

Ethyl alcohol is the common name of ethanol, which itself is the IUPAC name.
Alcohols are a family of organic compounds containing the hydroxyl (-OH) group.

The word 'alcohol' has been derived from the Arabic word 'Al-kuhl' which literally means 'the essence'.

Ethanol is present in most hard drinks like beer, wine, whiskey, etc.
9. Which of these is NOT a barrier method to prevent pregnancy?

Answer: tubectomy

Barrier methods prevent the entry of sperm into the female genital tract during sexual intercourse.

Tubectomy, on the other hand, is a surgical method whereby a small portion of the fallopian tube in females is cut and tied.
10. Which of these constellations is not also a zodiac sign?

Answer: Cetus

All zodiac signs are also the names of constellations though the reverse is not true.
