1. Alpha-fetoprotein is a protein produced by a fetus's liver that can be detected in a mother's blood. At what stage in a pregnancy is an alpha-fetoprotein test most accurate?

Answer: 16-18 weeks

High levels may be associated with spina bifida, while low levels may indicate Down's Syndrome.
2. What is 'cephalopelvic disproportion'?

Answer: the baby's head is too large to pass through the mother's pelvis

This condition accounts for about 5 percent of c-sections.
3. What is 'dystocia'?

Answer: when labour does not progress

Uterine dystocia is when contractions do not intensify. Shoulder dystocia is when the shoulders get stuck after the head has already been delivered.
4. In medical terminology, when does an embryo become a fetus?

Answer: ten weeks

After ten weeks, it is called a fetus.
5. What is the medical term for a pregnant woman?

Answer: gravida

6. What is effacement?

Answer: the thinning of the cervix before delivery

Sometimes called 'ripening' of the cervix. During effacement, the cervix will go from more than a inch thick to paper thin.
7. What is lochia?

Answer: vaginal bleeding after delivery

This vaginal discharge is made up of blood, mucus and tissue and can continue for up to six weeks after delivery.

Answer: care for a pregnant woman through labour

9. What was terbutaline used for in pregnancy?

Answer: a medication used to try and stop premature labour

It is a member of a family of drugs called tocolytics used to stop contractions, although its primary use is as an inhaler to relieve symptoms in asthma and other respiratory diseases.

Answer: the placenta

HCG can be detected in the urine as well as in the blood. HCG can be measured in the blood very early in pregnancy. Levels rise very quickly and then taper off after around 12 weeks.
