Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1956 was the first year that Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted the winter Olympic Games. However, they were scheduled to host in 1944, but the games were cancelled! Why was that?

Answer: World War II

The V Winter Olympic Games were originally scheduled to be played in 1940. However, due to WWII, they were postponed until 1944. In 1941, Cortina d'Ampezzo was scheduled to host the 1944 games, but WWII caused the games to be postponed yet again. The V Olympic Winter Games were eventually hosted by St. Moritz, Switzerland, n 1948.

Although previously scheduled, 1956 was the first year in which Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted the games.
2. The 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympic Games were unique in three different ways. In which of these ways were the Games not unique?

Answer: First Games with over 1000 athletes

The VII Olympic Winter Games in 1956 were the first shown on TV, which meant they needed to use sponsors for funding to pay for their spot on TV. All except one of the games were all within walking distance from each other, which was unique, because before then the games were much farther apart. There were only 821 athletes who partook in the games, nearly 700 of those being men.
3. There were 24 events in the 1956 Winter Olympic Games, with only 4 different sports represented. Which of these was not a sport represented in these games?

Answer: Curling

Of the 24 events, two were from bobsleighing. They included the two-man and the four-man competition. The skating competition in which the Soviet Union dominated, had four events, six events were skiing competitions, and the remaining 12 involved ice hockey.

The ice hockey events were played in a round robin way. The 10 teams were split into three groups, one containing four teams, the other two containing three teams. Each group would play each other, and the top two of each group moved on to play another round robin game between the six winning teams to see who would come out victorious.

The four losing teams also played each other to determine the 7th through 10th places. There were 22 events in all that were brought back from the 1952 Winter Olympics, along with two new skiing events.
4. More nations partook in the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo games than ever before, with 32 different nations. One nation made its debut Winter Olympic Games this year, and this nation even won more medals than any other nation in the Winter Olympics. What nation made their debut this year?

Answer: Soviet Union

Denmark did not partake in these games. Bolivia, Iran, and the Soviet Union all made their Winter Olympics debut during the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo games. The wound up winning more medals than any other nation in the Winter Olympics up to that point.
5. The host nation of the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo games came in 8th place in total number of gold medals won. How many total medals did Italy win?

Answer: 3

Italy won a gold medal and two silver medals. The Soviet Union dominated, with a total of 16 medals, 7 of those being gold. Austria came in second with 4 gold medas and a total of 11 medals, and third place was Finland with 7 total medals, 3 being gold. Of 72 total medals, the top 10 had 69 of them.

There were 24 bronze medals awarded, one to each event, 23 silver medals, and 25 gold medals. The reason for more gold medals than silver medals was due to a tie in one event, where two gold medals and one bronze medal were awarded.
6. All the events of the 1956 Winter Olympics were held in Cortina d'Ampezzo except for one. Which venue was situated 9 miles outside the town of Cortina d'Ampezzo?

Answer: Speed skating

The speed skating competitions took place in the Misurina Rink. The rink was unique for two reasons. Not only was it outside of the host city, 9 miles away from the other games, but it was also the last skating competition to ever be held outdoors, on natural ice.
7. The 1956 Winter Olympic Games ran smoothly except for one little incident. What happened in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956 that created a bit of hardship for the prep work for the Games?

Answer: Not enough snow fell in Cortina d'Ampezzo

Although each year the host cities had plenty of snow, in 1956, Cortina d'Ampezzo did not get near enough snowfall for the Games. There were patches of grass everywhere. This threatened any competition taking place on the snow. For weeks before the events, the Italian Army worked to move snow from other locations in the alpine region to the site of the Winter Olympic Games.

They put the snow in the empty patches so the games could begin on schedule with enough snow for the events.
8. The 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo games were officially opened by the President of Italy. Who was the President at the time of the Games?

Answer: Giovanni Gronchi

Enrico De Nicola was in office from January 1, 1948 to May 12, 1948. Luigi Einaudi then took over until May 11, 1955. Giovanni Gronchi was then President until May 11, 1962. It was during his 8th month of power that Gronchi opened the Olympics on January 26, 1956.

He was 69 years old at the time of the 1956 Winter Olympics. Antonio Segni then ruled from May 11, 1962 to December 6, 1964.
9. Cortina d'Ampezzo competed against three cities to host the 1956 Winter Olympic Games. Which of these cities did they not compete against to become the host city?

Answer: Vancouver

Vancouver, British Columbia was not in the running for being the host city. Cortina d'Ampezzo was voted to be the host city of the 1956 Winter Olympics on April 29, 1949. Cortina had lost to Oslo for the 1952 Winter games host, though they were able to win in 1956.
10. The opening and closing ceremonies of the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo games took place in which stadium?

Answer: Ice Stadium

The Snow Stadium, which could hold 6000 people, held all the cross-country skiing events. The Italia Jump, which could hold 2900 people, along with 40,000 more standing, was the hill used for the ski jumping competitions. The Apollonio Stadium was used for the ice hockey competitions, and could hold 2000 people, except for when it was temporarily enlarged or 12,000 total spectators.

The Ice Stadium could hold about 6500 people, and it is where the opening and closing ceremonies were held, along with all the figure skating competitions.
