Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which teams did the Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos defeat in their preliminary finals in order to qualify for the Grand Final?

Answer: St George Illawarra Dragons and Canterbury Bulldogs

Melbourne defeated the Dragons and Brisbane beat the Bulldogs.
2. Was this the first NRL Grand Final to feature two non-NSW teams?

Answer: yes

The National Rugby League had never before had a Grand Final without a team from New South Wales (the Grand Final is played in Sydney, the capital of NSW). This year also coincided with another instance in which the AFL (Australian Football League) Grand Final had no Victorian team.
3. Which long-serving Brisbane Bronco retired at the end of the Grand Final?

Answer: Shane Webcke

Front rower Shane Webcke, a one-club man, played 254 games for the Broncos, debuting in Round 10, 1995 against North Sydney. He also played 21 matches for Queensland in State of Origin and 20 Test matches for Australia.
4. Which of the following statements about Melbourne and Brisbane in Grand Finals is incorrect?

Answer: Melbourne had two players in their team from the 1999 Grand Final winning side

Melbourne had two players from the 1999 side, Matt Geyer and Scott Hill, but Hill missed their Grand Final victory through injury. Brisbane had five players from the 2000 decider: Darren Lockyer, Shane Webcke, Tonie Carroll, Shaun Berrigan and Brad Thorn. Brisbane had previously won five Grand Finals from five attempts (1992, 1993, 1997, 1998 and 2000) all under 2006 coach Wayne Bennett. Melbourne won from their first Grand Final in 1999.
5. Who scored the first try?

Answer: Steve Turner (Melbourne)

Lockyer kicked a penalty goal for Brisbane for the first points of the match (the Broncos leading 2-0), but Melbourne hit back with a try from winger Turner to lead 4-2.
6. What was the score at half time?

Answer: Brisbane 8-4

After the Turner try, Broncos centre Justin Hodges scored. Darren Lockyer converted the try to take the score to 8-4.
7. Which Melbourne player had a try disallowed in the second half?

Answer: Matt King

Matt King was later fined for saying the decision was incorrect. The try was disallowed because Storm forward Ryan Hoffman was ruled to have knocked in the lead-up to the try. The video referee who made the controversial ruling was Bill Harrigan, who was involved in the ruling of a penalty try in the 1999 Grand Final which meant Melbourne won the premiership against St George Illawarra.
8. Who kicked a field goal?

Answer: Darren Lockyer

The raspy-voiced Broncos captain kicked a one-pointer with seven minutes remaining in the game.
9. What was the final score?

Answer: Brisbane 15-8

Both teams scored two tries, Justin Hodges and Brent Tate for Brisbane, and Steve Turner and Matt King for Melbourne (King scored a legal try before he had one disallowed). Brisbane's kicking made all the difference, a conversion (two points), a penalty (two points), and a field goal (one point) from Lockyer and a penalty from Corey Parker. Melbourne's Cameron Smith (the 2006 Dally M Medalist) missed both of his attempts at conversion.
10. Who won the Clive Churchill medal for best player in the Grand Final?

Answer: Shaun Berrigan

Berrigan, Brisbane's hooker, won the award named for South Sydney's legendary fullback Clive Churchill. Lockyer was awarded the honour in Brisbane's 2000 Grand Final win over the Sydney Roosters.
