Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Quarter Final 1: the Roosters met the Sharks in a game where both sides scored 5 tries. What was the final score?

Answer: Roosters 32 Sharks 20

Sharks halfback and goal-kicker Brett Kimmorley had a bad night, missing all 5 of his attempts at goal.
2. Quarter Final 2: which team ended pre-season favourite Parramatta's season, beating them 24-14?

Answer: Brisbane

Parramatta led 14-12 just after half time, but Gorden Tallis scored a try to seal the victory for Brisbane, ending a disappointing season for the Eels.
3. Quarter Final 3: in an upset, Newcastle went down to which team that ran 7th in the minor premiership?

Answer: St George-Illawarra

This game will forever be remembered as the one that ended Newcastle captain and halfback Andrew Johns' season. He broke 3 bones in his back just 15 minutes into the game. The Dragons went on to win 26-22.
4. Quarter Final 4: the Warriors made history by being the first New Zealand based side to make the NRL finals?

Answer: False

They actually made the finals in 2001, going down to Parramatta after coming 8th. In 2002, they won the minor premiership, and earned a week's rest by defeating the Canberra Raiders 36-20 in Auckland. This was a historical game, as it was the first NRL finals match played in New Zealand.
5. Semi Final 1: the Sharks knocked the Dragons out of the premiership race. How many points were scored in this match?

Answer: 64

The final score was 40-24, a highly entertaining match, with 11 tries scored (7 tries to 4). Standouts for the Sharks were rookies Matt Bickerstaff and Paul Franze.
6. Semi Final 2: the Roosters and the Knights were locked at 6-6 at half time. What incident turned the match in one team's favour?

Answer: An intercept try to the Roosters

Newcastle's Sean Rudder made an 80m run, and was just caught by Roosters winger Anthony Minichello. On the next play, Roosters second rower Craig Fitzgibbon took an intercept and ran almost the length of the field to score and break the deadlock. The Roosters went on to score an impressive 38-12 victory.
7. Preliminary Final 1: the Sydney Roosters met the Brisbane Broncos. The Roosters won the match, but the most talked about statistic after the game was the penalty count. What was it?

Answer: 8-2 in favour of the Roosters

A classic finals series match. A close, defensive tussle between the two favourites for the premiership. The Broncos didn't receive a penalty until the 69th minute. Referee Bill Harrigan later defended himself, saying he tried everything he could to stop them giving away penalties, but they wouldn't listen to him.
8. Preliminary Final 2: which New Zealand Warriors player dived over to score the winning try against the Sharks, to put the Warriors into their first ever Grand Final?

Answer: John Carlaw

The scores were locked at 10-10 for most of the second half, before Stacey Jones put through a kick, and John Carlaw dived over to score the winning try. The Warriors had led 6-0 at half time.
9. Who won the 2002 NRL Grand Final?

Answer: roosters

The Sydney Roosters, formerly known as Sydney City and Eastern Suburbs, won their first title since 1975.
10. What was the score of the 2002 NRL Grand Final?

Answer: Roosters 30 Warriors 8

Most commentators agreed that the score did not reflect the closeness of the game. The Warriors led 8-6 early in the second half, but the Roosters seemed to find another gear soon after and piled on 24 unanswered points, thus ending season 2002 as premiers. Craig Fitzgibbon, who was playing in his 3rd Grand Final, finally tasted victory, after being part of St George-Illawarra (1999) and Sydney Roosters (2000) losing Grand Final sides.

He was also awarded the Clive Churchill medal for player of the match.
