Almirola was born on Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Almirola is a Cuban-American and has been nicknamed the "Cuban Missile".

Almirola won the pole for the Circuit City 250 at Milwaukee in 2007. Almirola was credited with the win in the number 20 Rockwell Automation car.

The race was stopped due to heavy rain after 112 of 160 laps, giving the number 43 car a win for the first time since 1999.
