Answer: 1934

Radio executive George Richards led a group that bought the team and moved them to Detroit. They were named the Lions in recognition of the Detroit Tigers baseball team and because the Lion was the monarch of the jungle. Richards had aspirations of his team being the jungle leaders.
2. Which one of the following players was a member of the Lions roster in the 1950s?

Answer: Doak Walker

Doak Walker was a Detroit Lion his entire professional football career from 1950-1955. He was a running back and had many honors bestowed upon him throughout college and professional ball. He was the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner, NFL Rookie of the Year in 1950, and helped lead the Lions to two championships in 1952 and 1953.

He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Detroit Lions retired his #37. The others mentioned were all players for the Cleveland Browns in the 1950s.
3. On what holiday have the Detroit Lions always played?

Answer: Thanksgiving Day

Inaugural owner George Richards was a radio executive. Through his connections he was able to schedule the Lions for a Thanksgiving Day game their first season.

Answer: Bobby Layne

Bobby Layne was the quarterback for the Lions in the 1950s. He led the team to their 4 championship appearances that included 3 wins. When he was traded to the Steelers in 1958, he supposedly said the Lions wouldn't win for 50 years. That has been called the curse of Bobby Layne. I'm sure the Detroit faithful are optimistic that the 50 years are up.
7. What Motown singer tried out for the Lions in 1970?

Answer: Marvin Gaye

After the death of his duet partner Tammi Terrell, Marvin added some pounds and trained for his team tryout. He was cut early but remained close to some of the players. A couple of them sang background vocals on his 1971 hit, "What's Going On".

Answer: Barry Sanders

Barry was selected as a first round, third overall draft pick by the Lions. He made the Pro Bowl in each of his 10 professional seasons. Sanders abruptly retired, and healthy too which is unusual in this rough sport, and after the 1998 season with several years left on his contract. Litigation ensued because of this. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Answer: Ford Field

Homes for the Lions team have been University of Detroit Stadium 1934-1937 and in 1940, Tiger Stadium 1938-1939 and 1941-1974, the Pontiac Silverdome 1975-2001, and then on to Ford Field in 2002.

Answer: William Clay Ford, Sr

William Clay Ford, Sr is a grandchild of Henry Ford. He purchased the Lions from a group of local businessmen led by Edwin J. Anderson.
