Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What pitcher set a record for most season wins, in his final year of baseball?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Sandy retired in 1966 due to arthritic problems in his arm. His final season saw him with an amazing record of 27-9. He went out with a bang, winning his 3rd Triple Crown and 3rd Cy Young Award in 1966. Koufax broke a 63 year old record held by Henry Schmidt. In the final seasons of the other greats, Johnson had only 5 wins, Ford had 2, and Gibson won 3.
2. How many teams in 2003, lost 100 or more games?

Answer: 1

The depressing Detroit Tigers were the only team to fall in this hole. With a record of 43-119, they watered the eyes of even their most loyal fans. The Tigers had no player bat .300, and no pitcher win 10 games. Mike Maroth led the team in wins with 9, but lost 21 in the process.
3. I played for one team throughout my entire career. I have many Gold Gloves hanging on my wall. In 1976, I hit 4 home runs in a game. I am a member of the Hall of Fame. I hit over 500 home runs in my career. Who am I?

Answer: Mike Schmidt

The others played for more than one team. Schmidt won 10 Gold Gloves for the Phillies at 3rd base. He was the 1986 NL MVP also. Mike smacked 4 home runs on April 17, 1976, against the Cubs in a 10 inning game which saw the Phillies win 18-16. He retired with 548 home runs.
4. What player hit 2 game-winning home runs in the 1923 World Series?

Answer: Casey Stengel

The others were not born yet. Casey's first was an inside the park home run against the Yankees. His game-winners, were the only wins for his Giants. The Yankees won the Series 4 games to 2.
5. What pitcher had the nickname of 'Dazzy'?

Answer: Clarence Vance

Dazzy Vance was a consistent pitcher in the 20s and 30s, mostly with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He won the Triple Crown and the National League MVP in 1934.
6. What 20 year old American Leaguer, was the youngest to ever win a batting title in 1955?

Answer: Al Kaline

Kaline of the Tigers, batted .340 in his 3rd season of baseball to win the title. He was 2nd in MVP voting. This would be his career high in 22 seasons, all with Detroit.
7. Who was the first black player to lead the American League in batting?

Answer: Tony Oliva

Oliva, in his first full season in the Majors, hit .323 for the Twins, and won the AL Rookie of the Year Award. He also won the batting title the following season with a .321 average. Although born in Cuba, MLB listed him as a black player. The others listed did not match the ethnic background.
8. Which number did Willie McCovey, Hank Aaron, and Reggie Jackson, all wear at some point in their career?

Answer: 44

A famous number in history. Ironically, McCovey matched his number by hitting 44 home runs in 1963. More extreme, Aaron hit exactly 44 home runs in a season 4 times in his career.
9. Who won the 1953 World Series, making it their 5th consecutive World Series title?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees beat the Dodgers 3 times from 1949-1953 in the promised land. Their other two victims were the Giants and Phillies. The following season in 1954, the Yankees took a break from the Series, then appeared in another 8 of 9 Series beginning in 1955.
10. What 2003 pitcher won the Major League strikeout crown?

Answer: Kerry Wood

The others were not even in the top 5. Wood fanned 266 batters in the season for the Cubs. 2003 was the 5th season for Kerry, and his 4th season striking out 200+ batters.
