Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the Yankees play their home games in 2002?

Answer: Yankee Stadium

The most historical ballpark in history, the Yankees drew an attendance of 3,465,807 fans in 2002, rated 2nd in the American League to the Seattle Mariners. Under Joe Torre, the team won the AL Eastern Division with a 103-58 record.
2. Who was the last Pittsburgh Pirate in the 20th century, to win a season MVP Award?

Answer: Barry Bonds

They were all Pirate MVP's, but Bonds was the last one in 1992. He also won the award in 1990. 7 of Bonds' first Major League seasons were with the Pirates, beginning in 1986. After moving to the Giants in 1993, and after he won the award with Pittsburgh, he won it again in San Francisco that season.

He won more MVP's in 2001 and 2002. Entering the 2003 season, Bonds had 5 MVP's to his credit, along with 613 home runs in 17 seasons.
3. In 1927, Babe Ruth lit up the league with his 60 home runs. Following Barry Bonds' record-breaking season after he hit 73 home runs in 2001, Bonds walked 198 times, setting a record for most walks in a season. How many times did the Babe walk, in his record-breaking home run year?

Answer: 137

Bonds set a record for walks in 2002 with 198, still short of the untouched 200 mark. Strangely enough, Babe Ruth did not receive the MVP in this stellar year. It was won by none other than Lou Gehrig, with his 47 home runs, .373 average, 175 RBI's, and his 218 hits.
4. I was much overshadowed in the pitching rotation by Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. In 9 seasons with the Dodgers I won 149 games. The number 23 on my back unfortunately witnessed my leading the league in losses in 1968 with 18. Who am I?

Answer: Claude Osteen

Osteen also helped the Dodgers win the World Series in 1965 against the Twins of Minnesota. Osteen was number 3 in the Dodger rotation in 1965 which also saw Koufax, Drysdale, and Johnny Podres. Ron Perranoski was their closer. Arguably, the greatest 4 punch combination in history.
5. How many Pittsburgh Pirates hit 50 home runs in 2002?

Answer: 0

No Pirate reached that plateau in 2002. Brian Giles hit 38 to lead the club, but that was about it for the Pittsburgh power, as nobody else hit 20. The Pirates finished 4th in the NL Central with a 72-89 record.
6. In what year did the Tampa Bay Devil Rays franchise begin?

Answer: 1998

The Devil Rays were the last addition to the Majors in the 20th century in 1998. In their first 5 seasons, they did reach the 70-win plateau. In 2002, no Devil Ray pitcher won 9 games the entire season.
7. What 'Bulldog' pitched 13 of his 18 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3 with the Indians, and was the 1988 Cy Young winner?

Answer: Orel Hershiser

Orel Leonard Hershiser IV, was nicknamed 'Bulldog' when he was with the Dodgers. He retired in 2000, just topping the 200-win barrier with 204. Hershiser also has a World Series ring, for the 1988 win over Oakland, which also earned him the Series MVP. The others listed retired long before Orel was a rookie.
8. Who did the Giants beat in the 2002 NLCS to make the trip to the World Series?

Answer: St.Louis Cardinals

The other teams listed were in the American League. The Giants beat the Cardinals 4 games to 1. Giant 37 year old catcher Benito Santiago, was named the Series MVP. Santiago batted .300 along with two home runs.
9. Which of the Niekro brothers had more career wins?

Answer: Phil

The Niekro brothers were Phil and Joe. Phil retired after 24 seasons, mostly with Atlanta, with a record of 318-224, almost 100 more wins than brother Joe. Phil led the league twice in wins, in 1971 and 1979. Joe played for 22 seasons, mostly with Houston. He retired with a record of 221-204. Joe led the league in shutouts in 1979.
