Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1960 World Series saw it all end in the bottom of the ninth inning in game seven, via a home run off the bat of Pittsburgh Pirate Bill Mazeroski. Yankee Ralph Terry dished up the pitch, and it was all over. However, a Pirate was not the MVP in the series. Who won it for the Yankees?

Answer: Bobby Richardson

Mantle, the season AL MVP runner-up, hit three homes in the series, had a .400 average along with 11 RBIs. Maris, who won the season AL MVP, hit two home runs of his own. Berra also added a home run. It was Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson who batted .367, hit one home run along with 12 RBIs, and won the series MVP. Mantle fans still think that the Commerce Comet was robbed.
2. Which of the following was a Major League baseball manager, a college football head coach, and a NFL head coach?

Answer: Hugo Bezdnek

Czech born Hugo Bezdek's first job in charge of it all was as the head coach at the University of Oregon. After being a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates, they hired him in 1917 as manager. 1918 found him as head coach and athletic director at Penn State.

The Cleveland (later Los Angeles) Rams hired him as their head coach in 1937, but after a 1-10 season, that was it for him in the NFL.
3. In modern day baseball (since 1920), which team was the first to win 100 games in a season, in a season that was less than 150 games?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The format was the 154-game season before baseball increased it in 1961 to 162 games. In the strike-shortened season of 1995, the Indians went 100-44. The Indians were led by the 50 home runs of Albert Belle, who was the runner-up AL MVP to Mo Vaughn of the Red Sox. Cleveland went on to lose to the Atlanta Braves in the World Series, four games to two.
4. Which 18-year old teenager threw a shutout in his debut as a starting pitcher?

Answer: Von McDaniel

In his second appearance of his career in June 1957, the St. Louis Cardinals gave McDaniel the starting nod against the Dodgers. Not only did he shut them out, but he threw a two-hitter in the game also. Von went 7-5 in the season, then retired after the 1958 season as a 19-year old.
5. How many Major League players finished their career with exactly 3000 hits?

Answer: 1

Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates played in his final game on October 3, 1972. He had a double which gave him exactly 3000. He would die in a plane crash less than three months later.
6. In 1975, which Pittsburgh Pirate tied a baseball record by going 7-for-7 in a nine-inning game?

Answer: Rennie Stennett

On September 16, the Pirate second baseman was perfect, and twice he had two hits in the same inning. Pittsburgh went on to win the game in an embarrassing 22-0 win. Cubs pitcher Rick Reuschel gave up eight earned runs in the first inning before he could get two outs. He took the loss while the Pirates and pitcher John Candelaria threw a three-hit shutout.
7. Which of the following players did not start their baseball career in San Diego?

Answer: Gary Sheffield

Alomar was a 1988 rookie with the Padres before being traded to the Blue Jays in 1990. Benes began his Padre career in 1989 before being traded to Seattle in 1995. Ausmus was drafted by the Colorado Rockies, but was traded to San Diego before ever playing a game in 1993.

He was then traded after three seasons to the Tigers in 1996. Sheffield was a Milwaukee Brewer from 1988-1991 before being traded to the Padres for the 1992 season, and was then traded to the Marlins in midseason 1993.
8. Who was the first player to win a Rookie of the Year award, then later take a team as a manager to a World Series title?

Answer: Alvin Dark

Both Dark and Piniella completed this duet. Dark won the Rookie of the Year award in 1948 with the Boston Braves, then took the Oakland Athletics to their World Series victory in 1974. Lou repeated this feat by being a Rookie of the Year in 1969 as a Kansas City Royal. He later took the Cincinnati Reds to the promised land against the Athletics in 1990.
9. Which of the following pitching greats won 20 games in a season, the most consecutive times in their career?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

In 12 consecutive seasons from 1903-1914, the New York Giant shined in Major League baseball. He retired after 17 seasons with 373 victories along with two Triple Crown awards. Although Spahn won 20 games in a season 13 times, he did it consecutively only six times. Walter Johnson of the Senators from 1910-1919, won 20 or more in each season consecutively.

The Big Train would win 20+ in a season, 12 times. Feller of the Indians would win 20+ in six seasons, but only three consecutive.
10. Which of the following set an American League record by being the youngest player to win a season MVP award?

Answer: Vida Blue

Blue won it in 1971 at the age of 22 and a few months old. He was an Oakland Athletic, went 24-8 in the season, and also won the Cy Young award for his efforts. Bench was also 22 at the time that he won a MVP, but he spent his entire career in the National League.
