Cardiff City were founded in 1899 by members of the Riverside Cricket Club as a way to keep their players fit during the winter months. They used the Riverside name until 1908 when the name Cardiff City was adopted.

The club's first home ground was Sophia Gardens. Their new home ground in 1910 was named after Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart, a local Member of Parliament and philanthropist who acted as guarantor for the money needed to build the new stadium. The record attendance at Ninian Park was 57,893 for a match against Arsenal in 1953. Safety regulations saw the capacity reduced to 22,000 in the early 2000s.

Cardiff City's 1927 FA Cup run saw them defeat Aston Villa, Darlington, Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea, before seeing off Reading in the semi-final at Molineux. In the final at Wembley, on 23rd April, a solitary goal by Scotsman Hugh Ferguson was enough to beat Arsenal and send the trophy to Wales.

Robert Earnshaw made his league debut for Cardiff City as a teenager in 1998. In season 2002-03, with the club playing in the third tier of English football, he scored 31 league goals as Cardiff eventually won promotion via the play-offs. This broke the previous record of 30 by Stan Richards in season 1946-47.

Cardiff City Stadium is the somewhat unimaginative name of Cardiff City's new home ground. The stadium was offically opened with a friendly against Celtic on 22nd July 2009. As well as Cardiff City home games, the stadium is also the regular venue for home games of the Welsh national team.

In April 2019, a record crowd of 33,082 attended City's game against Liverpool (F A Premier League).

Cardiff City were a second tier club in season 2007-08, so weren't among the favourites to win the FA Cup. After knokcing out non-league Chasetown in the 3rd round, they saw off Hereford, Wolves and Middlesbrough to reach the semi-finals, where they faced Barnsley at Wembley.

A singe goal by Joe Ledley was enough to see them through to the final, back at Wembley, on 17th May 2008. On the big day, Nwankwo Kanu scored the only goal of the final to take the trophy to Portsmouth.

Cardiff City's bluebirds nickname dates back to the early 20th century when a play called "The Blue Bird" by Maurice Maeterlinck was performed in the city, and fans linked it with the team's blue shirts. The nickname was an unofficial one until 1959 when the club formally adopted it'

Swans is the nickname of Cardiff's local rivals Swansea City; Robins is a nickname of a number of clubs, including Bristol City; Magpies is also the nickname of a number of clubs, including Newcastle United.

Owner Vincent Tan decided to change the club's shirts from blue to red in a re-branding exercise, with red being regarded as a "lucky" colour in the Far East. This did not go down well with the fans, who demonstrated against the change. He backed down after three seasons and the team reverted to their traditional blue.

Emiliano Sala was born in Argentina in 1990 and played his entire career in Europe. Cardiff City paid Nantes, of France, a club record fee of £15 million for him in January 2019. Unfortunately, the Piper Malibu aircraft flying him to Wales disappeared into the English Channel on January 21st, with his body eventually being recovered some weeks later.

Cardiff City qualified for the 1970-71 European Cup-Winners' Cup by virtue of winning the previous season's Welsh Cup. After defeating Pezoporikos of Cyprus and Nantes of France, they were drawn to face the famous Spanish club Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

In front of 47,500 fans in Cardiff, the Welsh club shocked Real in the first leg, with Brian Clark scoring the game's only goal. Sadly for Cardiff, Real won the return leg 2-0 and went through 2-1 on aggregate.
