Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The decade of the '90s was brought in with some Major League firsts. The Pirates' Barry Bonds who won the NL MVP, was the first players in history to hit .300 with 30 home runs and 50 stolen bases. Nine no-hitters were thrown in the season for the first time in history. Finally, George Brett was the first player to win batting titles in three different decades. Which team did Brett win all these batting title with?

Answer: Royals

Brett was a 21-season career Kansas City Royal from 1973-1993. His batting titles came in 1976, 1980, and 1990. George was also the 1980 American League MVP ahead of Reggie Jackson and Goose Gossage.
2. 1991 saw the Orioles' Cal Ripken Jr. win his second AL MVP. The Mets' David Cone struck out 19 Philadelphia Phillies on the last day of the season, and Lee Smith of the Cardinals set a new NL record for his 47 saves in the season. The season also saw a pitcher throw his last of seven no-hitters in his career. Which pitcher was this?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Ryan's no-no against the Blue Jays was his last on May 1, 1991. Nolan was a Texas Ranger at the time and retired in 1993. Amazingly enough, this strikeout king never won a league MVP or Cy Young award.
3. 1992 saw the Athletics' Dennis Eckersley win both the AL Cy Young and MVP awards. Also in Oakland, Rickey Henderson became the first player in history to steal 1000 career bases. It also saw a team win the first World Series for their country of Canada. Which team was this?

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays, with the help of John Olerud, Pat Borders, Joe Carter, Dave Winfield, and pitcher Jack Morris, brought the Blue Jays their first of two consecutive World Series titles in 1992.
4. Which San Francisco Giant won his third of seven National League MVP awards in 1993?

After playing for seven seasons as a Pittsburgh Pirate, Bonds signed as a free agent in December 1992 with the Giants. Bonds hit over 700 home runs in his career.
5. Which of the following did not happen in the 1994 season?

Answer: The Reds' Ken Griffey Jr hit 54 home runs

The World Series cancellation was the result of players and owners feuding over money again. The season was cancelled on September 14th for good. Jordan was assigned to Chicago's Double-A Birmingham club where he hit .202 in the season. Griffey Jr. was a Mariner in 1994 and he hit 40 home runs for his Seattle team.
6. 1995 saw the MVPs go to Mo Vaughn in the AL and Barry Larkin in the NL. Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves became the first pitcher in history to win four consecutive Cy Young awards. Which player in the season broke Lou Gehrig's record of 2131 consecutive games played?

Answer: Cal Ripken Jr.

Ripken of the Orioles played in 2632 consecutive games from 1982 to 1998. Cal retired after 21 seasons, all with the Baltimore Orioles in 2001 at the age of 40.
7. 1996 saw 16 players in the Major Leagues hit 40+ home runs in a season for the first time in history. Which milestone also occurred in 1996 for the first time in 54 seasons?

Answer: A shortstop won the batting title

Alex Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners won the American League batting title after Luke Appling, a shortstop for the Chicago White Sox who won it in 1943, and previously in 1936. Rodriguez batted .358 to win it over Frank Thomas of the White Sox with his .349.
8. 1997 saw a strange occurrance. Ken Griffey Jr. led both leagues in home runs with his 56 for the Mariners, although another player hit 58. His 56 helped Junior win the AL MVP award for the season. Larrry Walker of the Rockies led the NL with 49 of his own. Who hit 58 in the season but did not win a home run title?

Answer: Mark McGwire

After playing for many seasons with the Athletics, Mark was traded to the Cardinals for three players during mid-season 1997. He hit 34 for Oakland in 105 games, then another 24 in 51 games for the Cardinals. In 1998, McGwire set a new season record by hitting 70 home runs.
9. For their highest number of wins in a season with 114, this team went all the way and won the World Series against the Padres. Which team was this?

Answer: Yankees

The others were all National League teams along with the San Diego Padres. The Yankees went 114-48, shades of the 1927 Yankee dominant team. Scott Brosius was the series MVP with his .471 average, two home runs, and six RBIs in the four games to none skunking of the Padres.
10. In 1999, the Yankees won their second of three consecutive World Series under the helm of Joe Torre. Baseball saw a player hit two grand slams in the same inning in the name Fernando Tatis of the Cardinals. However, it was also a sad season as baseball lost a most beloved Yankee in the season.
