Frank Nighbor was the inaugural winner of the Hart trophy, when he played for the original Ottawa Senators franchise from 1917-18, to the middle 1929-30, when he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs during that season, and would retire after that season.

Answer: Howie Morenz

Morenz won the award for the first time in 1928, and was the first player to win the Hart trophy twice in a row in 1931 and 1932, all with the Montreal Canadiens. Eddie Shore was the 2nd player to win the Hart trophy twice in a row, when he won it in 1935 and 1936 winning it with the Boston Bruins, and he also won it in 1933 and 1938, all with Boston. Gordie Howe won the Hart trophy twice in a row in 1952 and 1953, and he won it twice in a row again in 1957 and 1958, in 1960, and a final time in 1963, all with the Detroit Red Wings. Bobby Hull would win the Hart trophy twice in a row in 1965 and in 1966 with the Chicago Blackhawks, and would play for them until the 1971-72 season, because the following year he would jump to the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association.
