Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1925, who was the first winner, chosen and presented the award by Lady Byng herself?

Answer: Frank Nighbor

Lady Byng and her husband Viscount Byng of Vimy were avid hockey fans and attended many Ottawa Senators games. She admired gentlemanly play and sportsmanship and donated the first trophy to reward and encourage it. When Frank Boucher won the Trophy seven times in eight years she was so impressed that she presented him the trophy to keep and she donated a second trophy.

After her death in 1949, the NHL changed the name from the Lady Byng Trophy to the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.
2. Nowadays the winner of the Trophy is chosen by vote from which of the following?

Answer: National Hockey Writers Association

The Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) is a professional association for ice hockey journalists writing for newspapers, magazines and websites.

The members also vote for other NHL awards, such as, the Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP), Calder Memorial Trophy (most proficient in first year), James Norris Memorial Trophy (top Defense player), Conn Smythe Trophy (most valuable to his team) and others.
3. In 2003 the recipient of the The Lady Byng Trophy refused to accept it.

Answer: True

Unfortunately, some hockey minds (players and fans alike) view the Trophy as a reward for "softness on the ice". Alex Mogilny of the Toronto Maple Leafs not only refused it--he didn't even show up at the award ceremony!

As the wife of a Canadian war hero, as well as former Governor-General, Lady Byng felt players who embodied on-ice respect and dignity should be recognized and celebrated.
4. Wayne Gretzky has won the Trophy five times during his extraordinary career. Which team was he on when he won the trophy three times?

Answer: LA Kings

Gretsky won in 1980 playing for the Edmonton Oilers. He won consecutively in 1991 and 1992 and then again 1994 for the LA Kings. His final win was in 1999 as a NY Ranger before his retirement.
5. The trophy has been awarded every year since 1925 except for which year?

Answer: 2005

In February of 2005, what would have been the 88th season of the NHL was officially canceled because of the NHL Lockout. It was the first time the Stanley Cup was not awarded since 1919 and the first time a major professional sports league in North America canceled a complete season because of a labor dispute.
6. When is the Trophy awarded?

Answer: after the Stanley Cup Playoffs

Three finalists are chosen and the winner is announced at the NHL Awards Ceremony after the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
7. In the first fifty years of its award, how many times has a goaltender won the Trophy?

Answer: 0

It must be hard for goalies to remember their manners! From 1925 to 1975 there have been 34 C, 4 D, 6 RW and 6 LW winners.
8. As one of the most penalized players in the NHL during his early career, which Chicago Black Hawk turned his game around and went on to win the Trophy back to back in 1967 and 1968?

Answer: Stan Mikita

According to his autobiography, "I Play to Win", when his daughter asked why he spent so much time sitting down (in the Penalty box) he couldn't give her an answer and decided to play a better game!
9. Who were the first father and son team to win the trophy?

Answer: Bobby and Brett Hull

Chivalry is not dead in the Hull family! Bobby Hull (dad) won in 1965 as a Chicago Black Hawk. He also garnered the Hart Memorial Trophy that year. Brett Hall (son) played for the St. Louis Blues and was awarded the Trophy in 1990. In 1991 he also was awarded the Hart Memorial trophy. Mrs. Hull must be so proud!
10. The Lady Byng Trophy awarded to Frank Boucher is kept on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Answer: False

Sadly the Trophy was destroyed by a fire in the Boucher home in 1962.
