Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the 2010 season in December, the Philadelphia Phillies signed Cliff Lee as a free agent pitcher. Which of these teams did he play for in 2009?

Answer: Phillies

The Phillies got Lee from the Indians in a July 2009 trade after eight seasons. The Phillies traded Cliff to the Mariners in December 2009, after he went 7-4 with them. The Mariners traded him to the Rangers in July 2010, then he ended the season as a free agent.

In December 2010, Lee signed back on the Phillies with a five-year contract. In less than two years, Lee made four moves. He won the American League Cy Young Award in 2010.
2. Which of these Hall of Famers hit the most World Series home runs in their career?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Frank went to five World Series, one with the Reds as a rookie in 1961, and the other four with the Orioles. He hit eight home runs in the promised land, including two in 1966, two in 1970, and two in the 1971 series. Musial of the Cardinals went to four World Series, and only hit one in the 1944 series against the Browns. Ott of the Giants went to three World Series and hit four home runs. Williams went to only one World Series and didn't hit any with the Red Sox.
3. Which of these Major League managers was in the managing business for over 30 seasons?

Answer: Tony LaRussa

LaRussa was in his 32nd season in 2010 while managing the Cardinals. In 2002, Tony won his fourth Manager of the Year Award. Mauch managed for 26 seasons, McCarthy for 24, and Alston for 23. Bobby Cox retired after the 2010 season with 29 seasons under his belt. Connie Mack managed for 53 seasons, a record most likely to never be broken.
4. Baseball's first-ever batting Triple Crown was hit in which season?

Answer: 1878

It was hit by Paul Hines of the Providence Grays of the National League. Paul led the league only twice in batting, once with the most RBIs, and once in home runs. They all combined into the Triple Crown in 1878. He retired after 20 seasons in 1891.
5. Only one World Series that went more than four games in the 20th century, resulted in every game being a shutout. Which two teams were these that went up against each other?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics - New York Giants

The 1905 World Series, which was the second World Series in history, pitted the Philadelphia Athletics against the New York Giants. The series went five games in a best-of-nine series. Game one went to the Giants 3-0, while the Athletics took game two with the same score.

The Giants won game three 9-0, game four 1-0, then the final game 2-0. Christy Mathewson won three games for the New York club.
6. In 1959, Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Roy Face had a remarkable season, winning 17 consecutive games. He still fell seven wins short of a consecutive win streak record set in 1937. Which pitcher was it that won 24 games in a row?

Answer: Carl Hubbell

Hubbell was a career New York Giant, and set a record from July 1936 to May 1937. In 1936 he went 26-6, then 22-8 in 1937 with 24 consecutive wins in-between. Carl won the 1936 NL MVP. Face ended his 1959 season with a 18-1 record and finished seventh for the MVP Award.
7. The Yankees were the first team to string three consecutive World Series crowns together in the 20th century. They actually did it twice when they strung four from 1936-1939, then five from 1949-1953. Who was the next team to win three consecutive World Series?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The Athletics were the only other franchise in the century to string three. Led by Catfish Hunter, Gene Tenace, and Sal Bando, they won their three from 1972-1974. They downed the Mets, Reds, and Dodgers.
8. Which of these switch-hitters hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game, the most times in their career?

Answer: Eddie Murray

Mantle was probably the most famous switch-hitter, being the first to bat for the Triple Crown in 1956. Mickey did the question 10 times in his career, but Murray did it for his 11th time in 1994 while with the Indians. Sierra did it six times while Smith accomplished it four times.
9. There were four World Series that had a best-of-nine series played. Three of them ended with the winning team taking the crown, five games to three. What was the result of the only other series?

Answer: Five games to two

The four World Series with the nine-game format were the 1903, 1919, 1920, and 1921. The 1920 series went five games to two with the Indians taking the title over the Brooklyn Robins. In 1903, the Americans put down the Pirates, the Reds defeated the White Sox in 1919, and the Yankees lost their first World Series appearance to the Giants in 1921. Those three series ended five games to three.
10. Which team in the 2000s decade lost the most games in one season?

Answer: Tigers

The 2003 Detroit Tigers were pretty dismal. They finished the season at 43-119. Not one hitter batted .300 in the season, and pitcher Mike Maroth led the team with nine wins. Mike also lost 21 in the process. The second worst team in the decade was the 2004 Arizona Diamondbacks who went 51-111.
