7. Which goalie wore the first mask in the N.H.L.?

Answer: Clint Benedict

On January 7th, 1930, Howie Morenz fired a shot at the Montreal Maroons net and Clint Benedict took the full force of the shot in the face, breaking his nose and cheekbone. When Benedict returned to the Montreal net, he was sporting a makeshift mask (mostly made of leather, and resembling a boxing face guard).

The experiment only lasted two games. In 1947 Charlie Rayner wore a plexiglass- type mask to protect a fractured cheekbone, but stopped wearing it after his injury healed! Jacques Plante first donned a fibreglass facemask on November 1st, 1959. (some sources state that a goaltender played a hockey game wearing facial protection in 1927 (three years before Clint Benedict donned his leather mask): Elizabeth Graham, playing net for Queen's, wore a mask for intercollegiate games.

Her mask of choice was a fencing mask. )
