Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2003, which pitcher was the first in 23 years to lose 20 or more games in a season?

Answer: Mike Maroth

After going 6-10 in his rookie season in 2002, Maroth, a Detroit Tiger pitcher, went 9-21 in 2003. The Tigers mustered one of the worst season records in history, by winning only 43 games. Maroth led the Tigers with wins in 2003. Brian Kingman of the Athletics went 8-20 in 1980.
2. Which 1997 Hall of Fame inductee, and one who won over 300 career games, also lost 20 games in a season twice?

Answer: Phil Niekro

Niekro's career mark was 318 and 274. In a four season stretch, Phil, with the Braves, lost an amazing 76 games from 1977-1980. He also won 20+ games in a season three times in his career. He retired at the age of 48 in 1987, and was ranked third all-time in home runs allowed at the time of his retirement.
3. After an amazing record of 31-6 in 1968, which pitcher lost 22 games three seasons later?

Answer: Denny McLain

McLain, of the Detroit Tigers, won the MVP and Cy Young for his stellar season in 1968. He tied for the Cy Young Award in 1969, then the bottom fell out. He was 3-5 in 1970, then 10-22 in 1971 with the Washington Senators.
4. I managed the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres. Prior to that, I had consecutive 20+ losing seasons with the Mets. Who am I?

Answer: Roger Craig

1962 and 1963 were record setting seasons for Craig, but not the records that he would cherish. In '62 with the Mets, he finished out the season with a 10-24 record, then the following season went a 5-22 record. Craig retired in 1966 with the Phillies.
5. In a run of seven seasons, this Philadelphia pitcher won 157 games, then lost 22 games in 1957. Who is this Hall of Famer?

Answer: Robin Roberts

Roberts played for 14 seasons with the Phillies before being traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 1962. In 16 of his 19 seasons, Roberts won in double figures, but fell short of the 300-win milestone with 286. He was inducted into the Hall in 1976.
6. In my first season with the Phillies in 1972, I led the league with wins, going 27-10. Dyslexia or something kicked in, as in 1973 I led the league in losses, going 13-20. I would rebound however, and win 20+ games four more times in my career. I retired as the number two strikeout king in the world. Who am I?

Answer: Steve Carlton

After seven seasons with the Cardinals of St. Louis, Carlton packed his bags and moved to Philadelphia in 1972. He won the Triple Crown and the Cy Young Award that season. However, he had his worst season in 1973. Ironically, the Phillies won only 59 games during Carlton's stellar season, and won 12 more in his losing season. Neither season saw a Phillie hit over .300.
7. Unbecoming of a Yankee, which pitcher won 20 games in 1965, then lost 20 games the following season?

Answer: Mel Stottlemyre

Stottlemyre went 20-9 in his second season in the big leagues. The following season, in 1966, he went 12-20. He still teetered the 150 strikeout mark in both seasons. Stottlemyre was a five time all-star.
8. Which Indian, and later Bostonian, went 21-9 in 1968, then 9-20 in the following season?

Answer: Luis Tiant

1968 was the season of Denny McLain, winning 31 games for the Tigers. 1969 was not the season for Tiant. In 1969, he also had more than 100 fewer strikeouts than his 21 game winning season. After this deplorable season in 1969, he was traded to the Twins, and threw a 7-3 record. From there it was on to Fenway Park in Boston.

After his first season in a Red Sox uniform going 1-7, he settled down and had seven consecutive winning seasons for Boston. Luis Clemente Tiant Vega retired in 1982.
9. Which of the following never lost 20 games in a season?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax of the Dodgers never lost more than 13 games in a season. The others listed, saw Koosman of the Mets go 8-20 in 1977. White Sox pitcher Wilbur Wood lost 20 games twice, in 1973 and 1975. Lolich of the Tigers went 16-21 in 1974.
10. In 1906, I went 13-21 for the Boston Pilgrims (later Red Sox). I also lost 20+ in a season twice, but those were both winning seasons for me. With 511 career wins, MLB named an award after me. Who am I?

Answer: Cy Young

Young lost 22 games in 1891, but also won 27 at the same time with the Cleveland Spiders. In 1894, he went 26-21. Ironically, in his 1906 losing season, he threw 140 strikeouts in the season. In 1895, when he won 35 games, Young only threw 121 strikeouts. Young was given membership to the Hall of Fame in the Hall's second year, 1937.
