Answer: Helsinki (1952)

Israel sent 25 sportsmen (22 men and 3 women) to the Helsinki summer games in 1952, and has participated in all summer Olympic Games since, excluding Moscow 1980 (when joining the western ban). The first Israeli participation in the winter Olympic games was in Lillehammer, 1994.
2. Between 1956 and 1968, Israel participated in the AFC (Asian Football Confederation). In which year did Israel win the Asian Nations Cup?

Answer: 1964

In 1964 the tournament was held in Israel, and Israel won its games against Hong Kong (1-0), India (2-0) and South Korea (2-1), to take the cup. In 1956 and 1960 Israel has finished runner-up, and in 1968 Israel has finished third. This was its last participation in this tournament, as Israel moved from AFC to UEFA, from the Asian confederation to the European confederation.
3. In 1970, Israel has made its debut appearance in the FIFA World Cup tournament in Mexico. Israel achieved a surprise result against one of the tournament's finalists. What was this result?

Answer: Israel v. Italy 0-0

This goalless draw was played at June 11th, 1970. Israel also drew with Seweden (1-1), and lost to Uruguay (0-2).
4. Esther Shahamorov-Roth was the first Israeli individual to reach an Olympic final. In which Olympic games was this achieved?

Answer: Montreal (1976)

In 1972 in Munich, Esther Shahamorov-Roth reached the semi-final of the 100m hurdles run for women. She had to withdraw from the event (along with all the Israeli delegation) after her personal coach was murdered by Palestinian terrorists along with 10 other Israeli delegation members after being kidnapped from inside the Olympic village and held hostage.
She returned to the games in 1976 in Montreal, and reached the historic final in the same event, where she has finished 6th.

In April 9th, 1977 Maccabi beat Mobilgirgi Varese 78-77. Captain Tal Brodie said "We (i.e. Israel) are on the map, we are staying on the map, not only in sports, but in everything". Maccabi lifted their seocnd title in 1981.

Answer: Shlomo Glickstein

Shlomo Glickstein was listed 22nd in the ATP rankings in November 1982. Five years later, Amos Mansdorf was ranked 18th. The Israeli team of has reached the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup in 1987, and lost to India.

Eli Ohana also scored against Dinamo Minsk in the quarter-finals. One of the greatest Israeli strikers of all time. He subsequently became a football coach and commentator.

Gal is a remarkable sportsman. In Atlanta 1996 he won the bronze medal in Mistral sailing. He failed to qualify for the Sydney 2000 games, but in Athens 2004 he bounced back to a fantastic performance which gave him the gold on the event's last day.
