Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many players on Canada's roster were returnees from the 2004 championship?

Answer: 12

After nearly winning the gold medal in 2004 with a team of mostly 18 year olds, 12 players were eligible to return to play in the 2005 event. The WJC is considered a 19 year old's tournament, and having so many 19 year olds allowed Canada to ice perhaps the most dominant team in WJC history.
2. Who was the starting goalie for Team Canada?

Answer: Jeff Glass

Glass, of the WHL's Kootenay Ice, won the number one spot in training camp. Beauchemin made the team as the backup, while Dubnyk and Nastiuk were cut in camp.
3. Who did Canada defeat in their first game and what was the score?

Answer: Slovakia, 7-3

Canada opened the tournament against underdog Slovakia on Christmas Day 2004. 17 year old phenom Sidney Crosby scored two goals to lead the Canucks to a 7-3 victory.
4. Canada won its second game 8-1. Who was the opponent?

Answer: Sweden

Team Canada kept on rolling. Sweden was expected to produce a stiffer challenge than Slovakia had, but Canada rolled over them by a score of 8-1. Crosby added two more goals in the cause.
5. Canada recorded its first shutout with a 9-0 win. Who did they beat?

Answer: Germany

Germany, not considered a hockey power by any stretch, was the unfortunate victim of Canada's rout. Backup Rejean Beauchemin got his first start and posted the shutout.
6. After finishing the round robin with a 4-0 record, Canada advanced directly to the semi-final. Who did they play and what was the result?

Answer: Czech Republic, 3-1 win

After earning the bye to the semi-final, Canada played its best defensive hockey to gain the 3-1 win over the Czechs, allowing them to advance to the final against Russia.
7. Who did Canada defeat in the gold medal game, and what was the score?

Answer: Russia, 6-1

It was thought that the Canada-Russia matchup would resemble the classic battles between the two hockey powers. The Canadians however, ran rampant over the Russians, defeating them 6-1 to win the long coveted gold medal.
8. Who led the tournament in scoring and was also named MVP?

Answer: Patrice Bergeron, Canada

Bergeron, who played with the NHL's Boston Bruins in his 2003-04 rookie season, was paired with undrafted phenom Sidney Crosby on Canada's top line. The move paid off as Bergeron led the tournament in scoring with 11 points, snagging him MVP honours as well.
9. Who was named top defenseman in the tournament?

Answer: Dion Phaneuf, Canada

Phaneuf was rock solid for Canada at both ends of the ice. A dangerous scoring threat, he also strikes fear into opponents for his thunderous Mack truck-like hits. Case in point: Phaneuf knocked Czech Rostislav Olesz out of the 2004 tournament with an electrifying open ice hit, earning him the phrase, "he Phaneufed him!" And in the 2005 final, he knocked down two opponents with one hit to set up a big goal, giving birth to the term, "Double Dion".
10. Which Canadian forward tied Eric Lindros' mark for WJC goals scored by a Canadian?

Answer: Jeff Carter

Carter, who stood out for Canada in the 2004 tournament, continued his heroics in 2005 by netting seven goals to give him a WJC career 12. Carter was picked 11th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2003 NHL draft.
