1. United won their first honour of the 1960s, and their first since Munich when they beat Leceister City 3-1 in the 1963 F.A. Cup Final. Who captained the Reds?

Answer: Noel Cantwell

Cantwell, who joined United from West Ham in November 1960, left the club to manage Coventry City. At one stage, he was tipped as a possible successor to Matt Busby.
2. While United were going great guns in the cup, their league form in 1963 was awful and they narrowly escaped relegation. What was their final position?

Answer: 19th

United were saved from relegation when they drew 1-1 with Manchester City in their last game. The draw was enough to send City down instead.
3. Matt Busby bought Denis Law from Torino in July 1962, but the Lawman didn't really blossom until Busby bought another player, to provide the passes. Who?

Answer: Pat Crerand

'When Pat plays well, United play well,' Busby once said.
4. This forward, an integral part of the great 60s team, was unfortunately overshadowed by Best-Law-Charlton. Yet his contribution to the club, especially his goals, was immense. Who was he?

Answer: David Herd

One of the most underrated players ever to play for United, Pat Crerand said of Herd, who joined from Arsenal, and was a first team regular until he broke his leg in 1967. A prolific goalscorer, he also had an extremely powerful shot.
5. Which great match saw Best hailed as 'el Beatle'?

Answer: The 5-1 drubbing of Benfica (1966)

Nevermind what that 2001 poll of United fans said. Best remains the greatest, most talented player ever to wear a United shirt.
6. In 1964-65, United played their 'forgotten' European campaign in the old Inter Cities Fairs Cup (changed later to the UEFA Cup). They reached the semi-finals going out on aggregate to which team?

Answer: Ferencvaros

I said it was their 'forgotten' campaign.
7. United were unique in the 1960s, in that they had 3 European Footballers of the Year in the same side. Charlton won in 1966, Best in 1968. In what year did Law win?

Law however, never won the English Footballer of the Year award. Charlton and Best both won, in the years they won the European award.

9. Between 1964 and 1968, Busby bought only one player. Who was it?

Answer: Alex Stepney

Stepney who signed from Chelsea, would go on to play for United until well into the 1970s. He also won one England cap, and would probably have won more if Gordon Banks hadn't been around, but he was a member of the 1970 World Cup squad. It's fascinating to think what would have happened if Alf Ramsey had chosen him, instead of Peter Bonetti, to replace the ill Banks in that 1970 World Cup quarter final.
10. Bill Foulkes scored the goal which gave United a 3-3 draw in the 1968 European Cup semi-final second leg, and a 4-3 win on aggregate. David Sadler also scored in that game. Who was the other scorer for United?

Answer: Zoco (own goal)

Foulkes played for United from the early 1950s to the end of the 1960s. He said scoring that goal in Madrid was his most precious moment in football.

Answer: Brian and Jimmy Greenhoff

Pat Dunne was the goalkeeper in the 1965 championship winning side. Tony of course was United's long serving fullback.
12. Which player became United's first substitute, after the Football League finally allowed substitutions?

Answer: John Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick, a wing-half who had to retire early because of injury, spent some 10 years at United, yet never won a major honour.
13. Busby generally tried not to sell payers to rival clubs, but when he sold this player to Leeds United at the start of the 1963-64 season, he didn't know Leeds were about to become a major club, and this player was still to have his best days on the pitch. Who was the player?

Answer: Johnny Giles

Giles made his league debut for United in 1959, and played his last game for Leeds in 1975. Oh well, Leeds gave Man Utd Cantona in 1992, so there should be no complaints.
14. Throughout the 1960s, Busby was faithfully served by his assistant manager who had taken charge of the team after Munich. Who was he?

Answer: Jimmy Murphy

Murphy retired as assistant manager in 1971.
15. When did Matt Busby announce his retirement as manager?

Answer: January 1969

The announcement was in January, and in June Wilf McGuiness took over as 'first team coach', with Busby staying on as general manager. McGuiness, a former Busby Babe whose career was blighted by injury was no novice. He had been a part of the England coaching staff for the 1966 World Cup.
