Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scored first triple-double in NBA All-Star Game history

Answer: Michael Jordan

Jordan was the first to ever record a triple-double in an NBA All-Star Game when he did it in 1997. It was during his first full season after returning to the league from his first retirement.

He recorded 14 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in just 26 minutes played.
2. Won six NBA Championships as a player

Answer: Michael Jordan

Jordan was a winner at nearly all levels. His University of North Carolina Tar Heels won a championship in 1982, Jordan's freshman season. He hit the game-winning shot.

He won two gold medals with the U.S. Olympic team and NBA championships in 1991-93 and 1996-98.
3. Started at center in the NBA finals, despite not being his natural position

Answer: Magic Johnson

As a rookie in the 1979-80 season Magic Johnson played primarily at point guard. However when his future Hall of Fame center, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was injured and unable to play in game six of the finals, Johnson announced that he would step in and play in his place.

While it's remembered as a huge step-up for Johnson, and he did take the opening tip-off, he played mostly at his natural position during the game. He played at all five positions during parts of the game.

He posted 42 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists to lead his Lakers to the title. He was rewarded with the Finals MVP award for his effort.
4. Came out of retirement twice, once to coach, and once to play again

Answer: Magic Johnson

Johnson retired prior to the 1992 season after it was announced he had contracted the HIV virus.

He played in the NBA All-Star game that year, despite not being on any team's roster, and played in the 1992 summer Olympics.

He joined the Lakers as the interim head coach for the last part of the 1994 season. He posted a 5-11 record as coach. After the season he resigned as coach, and bought a minority share of the team. He also served as team executive for several years.

Two years later he returned to the Lakers for the last part of the 1995-96 season. He played in 32 games, and finished in the top 15 in MVP voting, despite being 36 years old.

Prior to his comeback he had only come off the bench 9 times in his career. He started just 9 of the 32 games he played that season.
5. First player in NBA history to average more than 12 assists per game in the NBA finals. He did it six times

Answer: Magic Johnson

Johnson played in the NBA Finals nine times, winning five championships. He averaged more than a dozen assists per game in each championship season and also in the 1991 finals loss to Jordan's Bulls.

Johnson played all five positions in the NBA finals. His 9 appearances were in just 12 full seasons.
6. 10-time NBA scoring champion

Answer: Michael Jordan

Jordan won scoring titles from 1987-93. He was stopped only by his retirement and then won three more scoring titles in his final three seasons as a Chicago Bull from 1996-98.

His career scoring average was 30.1 points per game.
7. NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player

Answer: Magic Johnson

Johnson won the award in 1979 after he led his Michigan State Spartans to a 75-64 win over Larry Bird's undefeated Indiana State Hoosiers team. Johnson scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the championship game, earning the MVP award.

Jordan lost out to teammate James Worthy for the award when his team won the NCAA championship.
8. Retired (the first time) as the NBA career assist leader

Answer: Magic Johnson

On April 15, 1991 he notched 19 assists in a victory over the Mavericks. That was enough to pass Oscar Robertson as the career leader. That would be the last season he would play until returning for 32 games in 1996.

He retired with 9,921 career assists. During his 4-year hiatus he was passed on the career list by John Stockton.

Johnson, through the end of his playing career, was the only player to average more than 11 assists per game for a career.
9. Retired from playing basketball on three occasions.

Answer: Michael Jordan

Jordan first retired in 1993 after winning his third championship. He went off to play professional baseball at that time. Then he retired after the 1998 season and three more championships. He then returned for a two-year stint with the Wizards before retiring from basketball for a third time. In all he played 15 seasons.
10. First player to win an NBA MVP Award and the Defensive Player of the Year Award in the same season.

Answer: Michael Jordan

Jordan did this in 1988. He was the first player to win both awards in a career, and did so in the same season. He won back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year Awards in 1987 and '88. He was the MVP in 1988, '91, '92, '96 and '98.
